To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EDMUND J. HAs'sn'r'r and EDWIN E. DARRAGH, citizens of the United States, residing at Yonkers, county of Westchester, State of New York, and Boonton, county of Morris, State of New Jersey, respectively, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reels, fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same.
This invention relates to certain improvements in reels of the kind shown in United States Patent No. 950,851, dated March 1st, 1910, to Hunt and La May, intended for packaging light fabric, such as ruchings, laces and embroideries, etc., and other material as ribbons and braids, which are usually wound on a reel, reels of this class having many advantages over prior reels which are fully set forth in the specification of the patent.
It is the object of the present invention to improve in certain particulars the construction of the reel shown in the patent whereby a stronger and more finished reel is obtained, the edges of which are smooth and present no projecting portion on which delicate material may be caught or injured, which can be made rapidly and in which, because of the construction, lighter and cheaper edge and body stock may be our ployed.
In the improved reel of the present invention the reel is in the form of a flat tube, formed preferably by two pieces of cardboard provided with portions which can be turned or bent so as to overlap at the ends and provide a double thickness of material at those points. The edges on each side of the tube are turned over at right angles to form integral flanges on which are secured side or edge pieces formed to provide portions which can be turned over inside the flanges on the tube and form a double thickness of material at the sides or edges smooth throughout their length without any lap, so that no projections are formed on which delicate fabric would be liable to catch and be injured.

Fig. 4 is a detail section on line 4 of Fig. 1. Figs. 5 and 6 are face views of the blanks for forming the body and edges respectively of the reel.
Referring now to these drawings specifically, the body of the reel is marked A and is in the form of a flat tube of cardboard or similar light material having ends 5 rounded so as to present a smooth surface. In reels of this class, unless the material is heavy, the tube is liable to break at the ends, that is, at the bend where the greatest strain comes. By the present invention this and other defects are obviated by doubling the thickness of the material at the ends of the tube whereby a very much lighter and cheaper material may be used and at the same time a stronger construction obtained at the points where strength is required. The doubling of the material at the ends of the tube may be produced, as in the construction shown, by forming the tube of two blanks 6, 7 of light cardboard or other similar material, which blanks 6, 7 are cut with flaps 8 at the end, which overlap when the two blanks are put together in the reel, so as to form a double thickness of material on the rounded ends of the reel and portions of the body adjacent thereto, as shown in section in Fig. 2. The flaps 8 preferably have those portions 11 that form the rounded ends projecting beyond the rest of the flaps and cut with square shoulders, for a purpose presently to be described. The parts are assembled by bending around a suitable form and are united by gluing or pasting. The blanks 6, 7 are also cut to form integral flanges 10 on the side edges of the blanks, which are bent at right angles to the blank to form seats to which are secured the pieces forming the sides or edges 15 of the reel.
The sides or edges B of the reel are made of cardboard or other suitable material formed to fold over the edges of the flanges 10 and thus provide a double thickness of the edge material, so that a very strong and rigid structure is produced which. may be made of very light and cheap stock, a very important consideration, in reels of this class. An efficient construction for this purpose is shown in the figures, in which the side or edge blank is cut to form a body 12 with the usual rounded ends 13 and side flanges 1 1 which fold over on the inside of the flanges 10, and preferably have rounded projections or tabs 15 which fold over onto the rounded ends 13 so as to double the thickness of these parts. lhe edge blanks are secured on the sides of the tube as shown in Fig. 3, body portions 12 seating on the outside of the flanges 10 of the tube and the side flanges 1 1 of the edge blanks being turned over onto the inner side of the flanges 10 and secured as by gluing or pasting. The tabs 15 eachextend out from the side portions 14 substantially one-half the thickness of the tube A, so that when the flanges 14 are turned over inside the flanges 10, the edges of the side portions 1.4 will fit snugly against the walls of the tube, and the tabs 15 meet as indicated at 16 in Figs. 1 and 2, so as to double the thickness of the rounded ends 13 and form an edge with smooth surface having no projecting portions on which material may catch.
The object of the projecting portions 11 on flanges 8 will now be clear. The depth. of these projections is that of one thickness of the material of the edges. When the parts are assembled the tabs 15 on flanges 14 of the edge blanks fold down onto and around the portions of the rounded ends formed by projections 11, and the flange 10 of the other body blank seats against the squared shoulders of the projection, and the joint between the rounded end and the edge blank is thus concealed and finished and a stronger construction secured.
While the construction shown and described is an efficient one for carrying out this invention, changes and variations may be made in the same, and the invention is not limited to the precise form shown.
What we claim is 1. A reel for ruchings and the like consisting of a body formed of two blanks with their ends bent to overlap upon each other at the ends of the reel and secured together to form a flat tube with double thickness of material at the ends of the reel, and integral flanges on the walls of the tube on each side and extending at right angles thereto.

3. A reel for ruchings and the like consisting of a body formed of two blanks with their ends bent to overlap upon each other at the ends of the reel forming a flat tube with double thickness of materialat the ends of the reel, integral flanges on the walls of the tube extending at right angles thereto, and side pieces formed separately from the tube and secured to the tube flanges and folded over onto the inner side of the flanges, forming double thickness of the side material on the side edges.

5. A reel for ruchings and the like consisting of a body A in the form of a flat tube formed of two blanks each of which has flaps 8 bent to overlap upon each other at the ends of the reel and integral flanges 10 between the flaps and bent at right angles to the walls of the tube, side edges B formed separately from the tube and secured on the flanges having body portions 12 and integral flanges 14 folded over onto the inside of the flanges 10, and tabs 15 projecting beyond the tube ends and folded over onto the body portions 12.
6. A reel for ruchings and the like consisting of a body A in the form of a flat tube formed of two blanks each of which has flaps 8 bent to overlap upon each other at the ends of the reel and having the projecting portions 11 forming the rounded ends of the reel body and integral flanges 10 between the flaps and bent at right angles to the walls of the tube, side edges B formed separately from the tube and secured on the flanges having body portions 12 and integral flanges 14 folded over onto the inside of the flanges 10, and tabs 15 projecting beyond the tube ends and folded over onto the body portions 12 and around the projecting ends 11 of the tube.
