ASA BALLOU, OF BAILEY, MICHIGAN;
VENTILATl-:D BARREL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 433,510, dated August 5, 1890. Application led April 25, 1890*.V Serial No. 349,566. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, ASA W. BALLOU, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bailey, in the county of Muskegon and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ventilated Packages 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a ventilated package for containing fruits, vegetables,or other articles requiring air for preservation during transportation and storage; and it consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the parts and details hereinafter described, and specifically pointed out. in the claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, Wherein- Y Figure l represents a side elevation of a device embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a plan of the same, and Fig. 3 a` detail of one end in vertical section on the line m of Fig. 2.
Like letters indicate like parts throughout the drawings.
A A A A A represent a series of staves, arranged cylindriform at suitable distances apart au d forming the periphery of the package. The spaces between the staves should be sufficient to allow afree circulation of air and yet prevent the escape of the articles between the staves, and may vary somewhat, according to the purpose for which the package is used.
B B B B represent a series of bands secured to the staves at proper intervals for holding the staves in position.
C C C C represent a series of braces extending spirally from end to end of the package, and secured to the staves at suitable intervals for giving rigidity and strength to the structure.
The head consists of the grating formed of the bars D and cross-bars E, secured together, and is secured and held in place by and between the bands G upon the inside and F upon the outside of the end of the package. The ends of the staves project beyond the face of the heads slightly, forming a backing, to which the lining band F is nailed in closing the package.
Although the package shown in the drawings 'is cylindriform, I do not limit myself to this construction, as it is evident that by bending the staves'A in various directions a corresponding change in outline of the periphery of the package may be made, Whereby it may be given a bilge in the middle, as an ordinary cask, or any other desirable outline. The parts described are attached 'together With nails or screws in a substantial manner and form a rigid firm structure.
I claim- As an improved article of manufacture, the herein-described ventilated barrel, consisting of a series of longitudinal slats A, ar-
ranged at intervals in .cylindriform parallel`` to the axis of the barrel and forming the periphery thereof, a series of external bands B, the head consisting of a grating having bars E andD crossing each other and secured together, bands G and F for holding said head in place, said bands F being so located that the ends of said staves project beyond them, and a series of internal braces spirally arranged and extending from end to endl of the barrel and crossing said longitudinal staves diagonally, said parts being secured together substantially in the manner specified.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of tWo witnesses.
