, )ects to provide a fastening means which will be cheap and efective to make and to apply, and which will not penetrate through the tub walls into contact with the cntents thereof. I attain these and other objects by the devices illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tub with my improved fastening means in use thereon; Fig. 2' 's a similar view showing the fastenin means released; and Fig. 3 is an enlarge section showing the special form of staple used to attach the fastening means to the tub.`

This device is especially designed for closing tubs in which merchandise is shipped from the factory or wholesaler to the retail dealer. Any desired form of tub may be used but I have illustrated the inventionv in connection with a circular tub 1 provided with two binding straps or hoops 2 pref-v erably formed of wire. Four staples 3, formed substantially as shown in Fig. 3, are driven into the side of the tub at four equidistant points therein, alternate staples being diametrically opposite to each other. Each staple 3 is formed of wire with its ends ointed to enterthe side of the tub, and has 'its lower portion practically at right angles to the adjacent point 4so as to form adriving head which, when the staple is driven home, comes in contact with the side of the tub thus reventin its points from passing through t e wall o the tub. The upper portion of the staple isbent away in a curve, forming a loop through which the handle and fastening wires m'ay passed. It is evident that this device requires very little material and also very little care in putting it together and that therefore it can be done quickly and cheaply and yet it effectually secures the cover in place during shipment. Since the staples 3 do not penetrate the wall they do not come in contact with the contents ofthe tub. Further, no.
