UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANSON SEARLS, OF NEWARK, NEV JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO THE SEARLS RANDALL COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
PROP-BLOCK WASHER FOR CARRIAGES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 404,989, dated June 11, 1889.
Application filed April 4, 1889. Serial No. 305,954. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, ANsoN SEARLs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Prop-Block Washers for Carriages; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, pwhich will enable others skilled in the art to which .it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvement-s in prop-block washers for carriages; and it consists in a covered metal plate provided with a central flange projecting'through the covering, so as to form a bearing for the propjoints and other forms, all as hereinafter more fully described.
In the drawings herewith, Figure l is a face View of a completed washer. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of all the parts. Fig. 3 is an inside view of 'the plate C, and Fig. L an outside or face View of the same.
The plate C is metal cast or pressed into the desired form, and is provided with a hole b and flange c, that projects through the covering Aand is preferably made with a square or non-cylindrical flange D, that receives the non-cylindrical end of the seat-rail. (Not shown in the drawings.) The cylindrical end of the seat-rail passes through the hole b and receives the prop-joint and nut. (Not shown in the drawings.) WVhen the nut is screwed up, the prop-joint is forced against the flange c, and the iiange D on to the non-cylin drical part of the seat-rail that forms a bearing for the plate C. The plate C is provided with a covering A, of leather or any material, and perforaied to receive the iiange c, and may be attached to the plateC or covering B by stitches at the edge, or by any well-known means. The covering B forms an inside finish to the plate C, and when the coverings A and B are madeV of leather or like material they are united at the edge by stitches or any well known means, whereby I produce a leather washer having a solid metallic casein the plate C, that forms a collar or shoulder for the prop-joint, and the flange c holds the prop-joint out from the covering, so as to protect the same from the prop-joint.l
The prop-block washers have been made in many forms, wholly of leather or metal and by a combination of plates covered with leather; but in such cases no provisions have been made to form a bearing for the inside of the prop-joint thatprotected the covering or leather from the wear of the joint or from mashing up when the parts are forced together by the prop-nut that holds the propjoint.
The plate C may be covered with thin metal A and ornamented in any desired way, or plated with gold, silver, or nickel, as may be desired, and the covering attached to the edge Vof the plate C by any well-known means.
3. The combination of the plate C with i ANSON SEARLS.
