Description

C. TEMME.
METALLIC SIGN LETTERS.
No. 190,695, Patented Ma'y15,1877
MPETERS. FHDTV-LITHOGRAPHER. WASHINGON. D. c,
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
CHRISTIAN TEMME, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN METALLIC SIGN-LETTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [90,695, dated May 15, 1877; application filed February J5, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN TEMME, of St. Louis, St. Louis county, State of Missouri, have invented a certain Improved Metallic Sign-Letter, of which the following is a specification:
In this invention the letters composing the sign are cast in separate pieces, and are hollowed out at the back, so that the letters are formed of a thin shell of metal, composed of a front plate and two side and top plates, with an open back. The side and top plates are inclined outward, so as to shed rain, 8tc. Screw-bolts for holding the letters onto a suitable frame or backing are cast onto the front plate of the letters, so that the elasticity of the letters will tend to hold them firmly against the backing frame and prevent the entrance of water into the cavity of the letter, and thereby prevent rusting of the letters.
Figure 1 is an elevation of the back of one letter. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section at line as :v.
A is the letter, cast hollow with a front plate, a, and top, bottom, and side plates on.
The side, top, and bottom plates are inclined, as shown, so as to shed rain, 850., from the letters, so as to prevent rusting of the same, and also to give or allow of a slight spring in the letter, so that when the letter is being secured in place the edges of the top, side, and bottom plates at will tend to form a perfect joint with the backing B, to which it is secured by screw-bolts U; and to more efi'ectually accomplish this purpose the bolts 0 project from the center of the plate a of the letter, so that the slight spring in said plate may be utilized in accomplishing the purpose above stated, and also to prevent the liability of breakage in firmly securing the letters in place.
I claim- The sign-letter, having front plate a and inclined side, top, and bottom plates (1/, in combination with the bolts 0, arranged as described, and for the purpose set forth.
CHRISTIAN TEMME.
