COVER FOR SEWING-MACHINES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 404,752, dated June 4, 1889. Application filed August 17,1887. Serial No. 247,183. (No model.)

To all whom it may cncerm Be it known that I, NATHANIEL R. VAN HORN, of Toledo, in the county of Lucas, and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Covers for Sewi ng-Machines and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved cover in place upon a sewing-machine table. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 is a vertical section upon a line passing from front to rear.

In the use of sewing-machines much difficulty has heretofore been experienced in constructing a cover which, while having no unnecessary height, should possess sufficientstrength to avoid breakage in, case that the needle-bar was raised either by accidentally moving the treadle or by the turning of the driving-shaft by children, and an accident of 2 5 frequent occurrence has been the detachment of the top of a cover from such cause.

To remedy the defects named is the design of my invention, which invention consists, principally, in a sewing-machine cover in 0 which the top, front, and rear sides are formed from a continuous piece of bent wood, and each or either of said sides is re-enforced and strengthened by means of a superimposed panel, substantially as and for the purpose 3 5 hereinafter shown.

It consists; further, in a cover for sewingmachines, in which is combined a bent-wood piece that forms the front, top, and rear sides, separate pieces which form the ends, superimposed panels that re-enforce and strengthen said sides and ends, and moldings which are secured to and extend horizontally around the lower portions of said cover, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter set forth.

It consists, finally, in the combination of the bent-wood piece which constitutes the front, top, and rear sides, the separatelyformed end. pieces, the re-enforcing and strengthening panels, the molding which extends horizontally around the lower part of said cover, and the horizontal molding that is secured to and extends around the upper part of the same, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter shown and described.

In the carrying of my invention into practice I give to a piece of wood A, by means of dies or in any well-known manner, the shape necessary to adapt it for the front, top, and rear sides of a machine-cover. In the drawings the upper portion of my cover is shown to have a dome shape; but any other form may be given to such part, if desired. Within each end of the bent piece A, I now fit an end piece B, and secure the same in place by glue, by small nails which pass through said part A inward into said end piece, or by means of both glue and nails, and around the lower edge and at or near the upper part of the vertical portion of the cover thus formed attach two moldings C and D, respectively, that operate to strengthen and stiffen the same at such points, as well as to add to its ornamental appearance.

The cover is completed by securing upon each of the ends and the front and top sides of the same a central raised wood panel E, which may have any desired outline or surface design, and operates to strengthen and stiffen the part to which it is attached as well as to enhance the ornamental appearance ofsaid 8: cover. If desired, a panel may also be secured upon the rear side of said cover; but as said side is not subject to the hard usage to which the other side and the ends are exposed a panel at such point is not a necessity. 8 5

The bent piece A and panels E and E are preferably made from two or more thin sections or veneers, which are arranged so as to bring the grain of one section at an angle with the grain of the contiguous section, and then united by glue, by which arrangement there is secured a material increase in strength and said parts are far less liable to check or warp than if solid.

The cover thus described, in consequence 5 of the shape of its top and because of the manner of its construction, possesses great strength, while materially lighter than those of usual construct-ion, and the displacement of its top by any usage to which it would or- I00 ,dinarily be subjected or by any force less than what would be required for the breakage of the bent wood is impracticable.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is-- 1. In a sewing-machine cover, in combination with the continuous piece of bent wood forming the top and the rear and front sides of the cover, the end pieces fastened to said bent piece, and re-enforcing and strengthening panels superimposed upon the top, front sides, and ends of the cover, so as to aid in preserving the shape thereof, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. In a cover for sewing-machines, in combination with the continuous piece of wood bent to form the top, front, and rear sides of the cover, with straight or plane surfaces, the end pieces fastened to said bent piece, panels superimposed upon the end pieces and the straight or plane surfaces of the front and top of the cover, so as to strengthen and preserve the shape thereof, and a molding fastened to and extending around the lower portions of the cover, so as to define and preserve its shape, substantially as described.

3. The combination of the bent-wood piece which constitutes the front, top, and rear sides, the separately-formed end pieces, the re-enforcing and strengthening panels, the molding which extends horizontally around the lower part of said cover, and the horizontal molding that is secured to and extends around the upper part of the same, substantially as and for the purpose shown and described.
