APPLICATION FILED NOV. 27. 1903.

UNITED STAT S Patented June 21, 1904.
. JOHN DONAHUE, OF KNOXVILLE, TENNESSEE.
COFFIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 763,092, dated June 21, 1904.
A li ati fil d November 27, 1903. Serial No. 182,798. (No model.)
To all whom 2125 711,04; concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN DONAI-IUE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Knoxville, in the county of Knox and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Coffins, of. which the following is a specification, reference being had to th accompanying drawings.
My improvement relates particularly to coffins constructed in part of wood and in part of sheet metal, the ends of the coifin being formed of sheet metal and the intervening portion being formed of wood.
The object of the invention is to produce a construction which may be economically manufactured and which shall combine lightness and strength.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a coflin embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a plan of one end of the coffin, the lid having been removed. Fig. 3
" is a horizontal section on the line 3 3 of Fig.
1. Fig. i is a vertical section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a vertical section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2.
Referring to said drawings, 1 is the wooden bottom of the cotfin, and 2 2 are wooden side walls joined by their lower edges to the lateral edges of the bottom in the usual manner. End walls 3, each formed by pressing a single piece of sheet metal, are applied to the ends of the side walls 2 and the bottom 1, the latter extending beyond the side walls to conform to and meet the lower edges of the end walls.
The side walls 2 may be provided with suitable wooden moldings, as 4, extending lengthwise along the lower edge of said wall, and 5, extending along the outside of the upper edge of the wall 2 and forming a rest for the lid 6. Said wall may also have a molding 7 intervening between the moldings 4 and 5.
Each end wall is a single piece of sheet metal, and it overlaps the adjacent ends of the wooden walls 2 by extending over the outside of the latter far enough to permit securing thereto 1n any suitable manner, as by nails 8.
1 and form a support for the latter, as clearly shown in Fig. 5, and said end wall is also preferably fluted to form a mold 10, corresponding to the mold 7 on the side wall, the mold 9 overlapping the wooden mold 4 and.
' the mold 1O overlapping the wooden mold 7 The upper edge of the end wall is bent outward horizontally to form a flange 11, standing at an elevation a short distance (approximately one-half an inch) below the upper edge of the side walls. The molding 5 is extended from the side walls around the exterior of the upper portion of the end wall and pro-- vided on its inner face with a horizontal sawcut at proper elevation and of properdepth to receive the flange 11 of the end wall. Said mold and said end wall are joined to each other in any suitable manner, as by gluing or with suitable nails 18. This construction gives the coflin a pleasing appearance and makes the upper portion of each end of the coflin strong and firm and at the same time provides a proper seat for the lid and also provides a wooden face lL above the flange 11 on the interior of the coflin for the attachment of the upper edge of afabric lining 15.
The exterior of the coflin may be painted or covered with any suitable fabric.
1 claim as my invention- 1. In a coflin, the combination with the bottom, 1, and wooden side walls, 2, of sheetmetal end walls of less height than'the-side walls and suitably secured to said bottom and having their vertical edges overlapping the exterior of said side walls and having their upper edge bent outward to form a horizontal flange, and an exterior wooden molding surrounding the upper portion of said side walls and said end walls and having a sawcut receiving said flange, substantially as described.
2. In a coffin, the combination with the bottom, 1, and wooden side walls, 2, of sheet- In testimony whereof I have signed my metal end Walls having their vertical edges name, in presence of two witnesses, this 18th 10 overlapping the exterior of said side walls day ofNovernber, in the year 1903;
and having their lower edge suitably secured 5 to said bottom, and a molding, 5, extending JOHN DONAHUE' along and suitably secured to the exterior up- W'itnesses: per edge only of said side walls and said end CYRUS KEHR,
Walls, substantially as described. HORACE VAN DEVENTER.
