Description
(NovModel.) n I'. L. GORDON.
TOY PISTOL.
No. 404,275. Patented May 28, 1889.
UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS L. GORDON, OF BUFFALO, NEWv YORK.
TOY PISTOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 404,275, dated May 28, 1889.
Serial No. 276,071. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be itknown that L'FRANoIs L. GORDON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and use- -ful Improvements in Toy Pistols; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention consists in a certain improved construction in toy pistols for firing percussion-caps and throwing lire-crackers into the air, all of which will be fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side View of the pistol, with one half of the shell removed and showing the parts adjusted for firing. Fig. 2 is a similar View showing the position of parts after the pistol has been fired, and Figs. 3 and 4 are detached detailyiews.
Referringto the drawings, the frame of the pistol is cast of metal, in two pieces or halfshells, a, one of which is shown in the drawings in Figs. l and 2. The half-shells a are recessed to receive the operative parts and riveted together to form the complete shell a is the front or barrel portion adapted for the reception of the fire-cracker, as seen in Fig. l.
b is a rod or plunger, its front end having the enlarged head b', loosely fitting the bore of the barrel a. Its rear end is enlarged and has the side lug, b2, which slides in a slot in the frame and on the under side the shoulder or catch o3. A spiral spring, b4, is interposed between the head b of the plunger b and the annular shoulder a2 in the barrel a.
b4 (see Fig. 3) is a thumb-piece for manipulating the plunger, which extends outwardly and rides in a slot in the side of the frame.
c is a catch pivoted in the frame, having the arm or extension c', against the under side of which rests the bent spring c2. When the plunger Z) is pulled back, its catch b3 engages with the pivoted catch c, and is held in such engagement by the spring c2, which eX- erts an upward pressure against the arm c of .the catch c, as clearly shown in Fig. l.
CZ is the hammer, pivoted at d in the frame and having the enlarged outer end, cl2, adapted to strike in the recess or seat a3, in which the percussion-cap is placed to be exploded by th-e blow of t-he hammer.
(Z3 is an arm extending out rearwardly from the hammer d, against the under side of which one end of the spring d4 presses.
d5 is a shoulder or catch on the hammer near the pivot-point.
e is the trigger, pivoted in the frame at c. e2 is an arm or forward extension adapted to engage with the arm c of the catch c.
c3 is a shoulder or catch for engagement with the catch d5 of the hammer d, and c4 is a rearwardly-extending arm, against which the under side of the spring d* presses.
The different parts just described are set for action, as shown in Fig. 1, the spring d4 holding the arm e4 of the trigger down against the frame, the catch e3 of the trigger engaging the catch d5 of the hammer, and the arm e2 of the trigger resting over the arm c of the catch c. When the trigger e is pulled back, its arm e2 throws down the arm c of the catch c, which is thus disengaged from the catch b3 of the plunger b. The spiral spring??4 throws forward the plunger and forcibly ejects the fire-cracker just as it is about to explode. In the meantime the shoulders e3 and d5 of the trigger and hammer are disengaged, allowing the hammer d to be thrown by the action of spring CZ4 against the percussion-cap in the recess or seat a3.
It is apparent that the throwing of the iirecracker and the explosion of the cap can be done separately or simultaneously at pleasure.
Another feature is provided at the buttend of the pistol for exploding caps, consisting of the holder f, pivoted by means of its lugs j" in the frame. f2 is its enlarged end, adapted to rest in the recessed portion a4 of the butt of the pistol. Its other end, f3, has resting upon its upper grooved side'the end of a spring, g, which holds the enlarged end f2 against the butt-end of the pistol-frame. Its operation is as follows: The end f3 is pressed in toward the frame, thus throwing out the end f2, when a percussion-cap is placed IOO in the rece d portion (t4 of the butt. The portion fis then allowed to npring' down gently upon the cap, holding it in the recess It. The pistol then being grasped by its borrel end isstruek upon itsbutt-endagaiinst any hard surface, and the @op is exploded.
l. In atoy pistol, the combination, with the Spring-pressed plunger I), having a C21-teli, b3, of the pivoted lever o, having :L catch to engage the saine, and L reerworally-extending wiring-pressed 2mn, end the trigger (2, having the extension c?, which. engages said arm and holds the catch in engagement with the plu nger, Substantially as shown and described.
