AUTOMATIC LoADINe ,rrs'ron'l and the primary object of the invention is to simpllfy the construction of the pistol and to provide an improved frame, which can be readily and quickly taken down by the ordinary layman to expose the working parts thereof, to permit of the cleaning and the replacing of the parts when neces- I sar i, without the use of tools. nother object of the invention is to provide an'automatic pistol in which the frame thereof embodies af minimum number of parts which are associated with one another in such a manner as to permit the smooth operation of the gunv with a minimum amount of wear on the a maximum amount of sa ety for the user.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved means for mounting 'the' ejector in position', so as to not require the use of fastening elements and which will absolutely preclude movement thereofwhen the pistol is in use, and which'wi'll permit of the replacing of the ejector when worn. A furt er object of the invention is to provide a single element carried by the A frame for` holding the handle plate agalnst movement, the pivoted catch for the magazine in position, and the removable plates for the hand grip against dis lacement. y
still further object of the invention is to provide an improved automatic pistol of the above character which is durable and eiiicient in'use, one that is simple and easy to manufacture, and one'which can be placed upon the market at a reasonable cost.

Referring to the drawings, in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter A generally indicates the improved pistol, 'the frame of which consists of two essential parts, namely the hand grip frame 15 and the top frame l 16. which carries the barrel 17.
' The hand grip frame 15 includes-the longitudinaliy extending side wall 18 and the depending downwardly extending handleframe 19, which projects laterally from the lower edge of the sidewall 18. `'lhehandle frame 19 includes the front and rear Walls 20 and 21 and the integral side plate 22,
which' terminates vshort of the side wall 18. yThe inner surfaces. of the front and rear `walls 20 and/21 are providedadj acent to one side face thereof with grooves 23, which slidably receive the removable side plate 24.
The side plate 24y ends short of the'top edges of the front and rear walls 2O and 21` as clearly shown in AFigures 3 and 4 of the f drawings. The side plates 22 and 24l form means for receiving the fastening screws which detachably hold the hand grip plates 26 in position.' The hand grip plates 26 are shaped to conform tothe configuration of the handleframe 19 and have their outer surfaces serrated so as lto permit a firm grip to be obtained on the pistol by the hand of the user. kThe fastening screws 25 eX- tend through the hand grip plates 26 into the upper ends of the side plates22 and 24 and thesejp'lates are provided with suitable internally threaded openings 27 for the reception-of thesame. The upper end of the rear wall 21 supports the rearwardly eX- tending lower wall 2 8, which extends laterally from the side. wall 18 and this wall is provided with a grooved upwardly extending portion 34 of the barrel 17. The body 32 is provided with a' pair of depending parallel spaced flanges 35, which engage on opposite sides ofthe reduced po-rtion'of the 15- and 16 are in assembled position. Thesel registerin 'openings are adapted to recelve trigger guard 31 and these flanges have registering openings 36 which are adapted to registerwith an opening 37 formed in the trigger guard 31 when the frame =sections a remova le thumb screw 38 which is ta# pered toward one end so as to facilitate the positioning thereof in the pair of openings..-
The body 32 has integrally formed therewith the rearwardly extending top wall or plate 39, the free end of which is'providedwith a bevelled tongue 40 which is adapted to t in a notch 41 formed in the upper portion of the forward faceof the end block 30.
One face of the squared portion 34 of the barrel 17 is notched as at 42 for the reception of the base plate `43 of the ejector. 44. The outer surface of the base plate 43 extends flush with the squared portion 34 of the barrel 17 and carries the rearwardly exi tending. red. 45 the free terminal ef whieh carries a. hooked end 46. The inner surface .of the body 32 is recessed as at 47 for the 'reception ofthe inner end of the rod 45.
The lower forward face of the squared por-Q tion of the barrel is 'provided with a plurality of depending teeth 48, which are vadapted to engage teeth 49 cut in the upper surface of the trigger guardr 31. These teeth 48 and 49 absolutely preclude any movement of the barrelV in relation to the trigger guard when the portions of the frame are in their assembled position. The upper surface of the rear wall 28 and the lower edge of the end block 30 are provided with ooves 50, which slidably receive the side .plate 51, which extends in parallel relation to the side plate or wall 18 and this side plate or wall 51 is shaped to conform to the configuration of the side wall or plate 18. The groove formed inthev end block 30 terminates short of the rear end of the block 'and this prevents rearward movement ofY the side plate or wall 51 and when the top frame 16 is in position the flanges 35 thereofv engage the forward edgeof the side plate and prevent forward movement thereof. One of the depending Hanges 35 is provided with a cut out portion which is adapted to receive the lforwardly projecting tongue 52 formed on the side plate 51. The provision of this tongue provides for a-tight 'fit between the portions of the frame.
The space between the side platesor walls 18 and 51 andthe top plate 39 is adapted to slidably receive the breech block 53 and the same is provided with rearwardly extending 10() sidewalls 54, which are adapted to slidably engage the outer surfaces of the end block 30 when the breech block is moved to itsV rearmost position. Theouter surfaces ofthe breech block are providedwith suitable corrugations to Vpermit a firm grip to be had on the same by the user of thev pistol. The breech block 53 carries the rearwardly ex tending bolt 55 and the bolt and breech block vare slotted to receive the iring pin 56, which has coiled around vthe same intermediate ends the rebound'spring 57 which is tted 1n a suitable opening 58 formedm the breech bleek. The lower end of the rear wall 21 of the handle frame 19 is provided with a'transr versely extending recess, which is adapted to receive a pin 63 and this pin 63 engages the iange formed on the side plate 24 to hold the same against accidental displacement from the handle. The terminals of this pin project outwardly beyond the side faces of the rear wall 21 and are adapted to be positioned in suitable sockets 64 provided in the inner surfaces of the hand gripplates 26 and this pin effectively prevents twisting movement of the hand-grip plates on the screws 25 as a pivot. This pin 63 further acts as a pivot pin for the retaining latch 65 of the magazine 66, which has been described 1n detail in the pending application. The latch 65 is provided' with a hooked end'66 which is adapted toengage the lower end of the magazine and hold the same againstdisplacement. This hooked end 66 is serrated so as to permit a firm grip to be obtained thereon by the thumbof the user. A'coiled Spring 67 is provided for normally urging the hooked end 66 into engagement with the magazine. Thusl it will be seen ythat the pin 63 performs a three fold function, namely, a pivot pin for the latch 65, ay retaining pin for the side plate 24, anda means for preventing thel twisting of the hand grip plates 26. c
The inner surface ofthe side wall or plate 18 is provided adjacent to its rear end rwith integral' inwardly extending spaced pivot pins 6 8 and 69, which form respectively pivots for the hammer 58 and the sear 70. The
hub of the hammer 58 is provided with a relatively deep notch 71 which forms the safety or half cock for the hammer and a y relatively shallownotch72 which forms the full Acock for the hammer. The-scar 70 is provided with a rearwardly extending terminal 73 ,whichv is adapted to engage in either of the notches. .o The sear' is normally moved into engagement with the hub of the lhammer by means .of an expansion coiled 'spring 7 3" which'is confined between an inwardly extending lug 74 formed on the side wall or plate 18 and against anextension 75 formed on the sear. The forward end of the frame 15. is provided with a cut out portion which receives the upper end of the trigger 76 and this cut out portion is provided with an integral pivot pin 77 therefor. The trigger 76 is pvotally connected to the trigger bar 78, and theinner surface of the side wallor plate 18 is recessed to receive the same and this trigger bar fits flush with the inner surface of the plate or wall' 18. The upper edge of the trigger bar 78 is v The trigger 76 is normally urged to a forward position by means of an expansion coiled spring 81 which is fittedl in a suitable recess provided in the frame for that purpose. The upper end of the rear of the handle frame carries a lug 82 which is recesse'd to slidably receive -the hammer pin 83 and this hammer pin has coiled around the same the expansion spring 84 which is adapted to normally urge the hammer toward the firing pin. The pin 83 is provided'with a head 85 which engages the hammer below the pivot pin 68. The lug 82 also provides a support foran expansion coiled spring 84', which engages the trigger 'bar and normally urges the same into engagement with the sear 7 0. The side plate 51 is provided with a recess 88 which 'receives the safety catch member 89, which is adapted to be moved into the path of the breech block 53 when the last cartridge has been fired. This safety catchl 89 includes the flat plate 90, the forward end of which is pivotally mounted upon an integral pin l91 which is formed on the side wall or plate 51. A The upper edge of the plate is provided with an upwardly extending lug 92. The forward end of the plate 90 is provided with a depending extension 94, which carries the outwardly extending operating knob 95l which is slidably mounted in a notch 96 formed in the side plate. The lug 92 is adapted tobe moved into the path of the breech block 53, when the same `has been.
moved to its rearmost position by the explosion of the last cartridge, by the cartridge follower 97 which is normally urged upwardly in the magazine by the expansion coil spring 98. The follower 97l is provided with outwardly extending knobs 99, whichare slidably mounted in longitudinally extending slots 100 formed-in the side walls of the magazine. These knobs' 99 are adapted to facilitate the movement of the follower to the lower end of the magazine when it is desired to refill the magazine with cartridges. The inner surface of the side wall or plate 51 is provided with a groove 101 which. isadapted to receive the follower 97 and when the last cartridge is expended from the magazine it; will be seen that one ofthe knobs 99 will move upward in the groove 101 and engage the plate 89 and move the lug 92 upwardly. This effectively prevents the movement of the breech block back to its normal position when the last cartridge has been expended, thereby electively calling the attention of the user of the pistol when all of the cartridges have been fired. The breech block can be readily returned to its normal position by pushing down the knob 95 which will move the lug 92 below the path of the breech .block against the tensionY of the magazine sprin 98. i The-forward end o the breech.'block`53 1s provided withia recess 103 which supports a pivot pin 104 on which is pivotally mounted the extractor 105. The extractor 105 is provided with a hooked terminal which is adapted to engage the rim of a cartridge' When the same is positioned 'in the bore of the barrel and-a; notch 106 is formed inthe barrel for the reception of the hooked end. The hooked end of the extractor 105 is normally held in engagement with the cartridge dental movement and displacement from en. gagement with the barrel and top frame 16,
by theside wall or plate 18 which is notched as at 108 for engagement with the same.
From the foregoing description of the drawings, it can be seen that an exceptionally simple frame is provided and`V it is merely necessary to loosen and remove the thumb lscrew 38Ywhen it'is desired to take down the lrame of the pistol to expose the parts to view, when it is desired to clean or repair the pistol.` After the thumb screw 38 has been removed, pressure is applied to the forward end of the barrel which moves the teeth 48 out of engagement with the teeth 49 and swings the frame on the tongue 40 asV a pivot and a sliding forwardmovement of the frame 16 moves the tongue 40 out of engagement with the notch 41. The side plate or wall 51 can then be slid out of engagement withthe handle frame -15 which completely exposes all of the working parts of the pistol to'l view. The breech block can also be readily removed by Asliding the same forwardly on .the framel.

In an automatic pistol, a top frame including a body having a longitudinally extending slot, a barrel having a rearwardly extending 'shank polygonal shaped in cross section detachably fitted in said slot, one face of the polygonal shank having a recess therein, an ejectorvincluding a shank having a hooked terminal and a flat .plate fitted in said recess and engaging the inner surface Vof the body, a hand gripframe arranged to engage the rear edge of the flat plate of the ejector when the frames are in assembled position, and means for holding the frames in assembled position.

In an automatic plstol, a handle includking a rear Wall, an integral side wall, a removable side wall slidabl carried by the rear wall, detachable handy grip plates carried by the opposite sides of the handle and a pin carried by the rear wall and arranged to engage the side wall and the hand gr1p plates tohold the same against movement.

In an automatic pistol, an open handle frame including a front and a rear wall, an integral connecting side wall, aremovable side wall slidably carried by the front and rear Walls, a magazine arranged to be received in thehandle, a catch carried by the rear Wall and arranged to detachably engage the magazine to hold the same against movement, side grip plates carried by the handle and a transversely extending pin arranged to pivotally support the catch, and
