STEPHEN G. BALDVIN, OF MARION, INDIANA.
INK-WELL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 404,247, dated May 28, 1889.
Application filed October 18, 1888. Serial No. 288,435. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, STEPHEN G. BALDWIN, of Marion, in the county of Grant and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ink-Vells; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsto make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in inkstands.
The object of the invention is to produce an inkstand exceedingly compact and convenient in shape and size, occupying but a small space upon a desk or other place, being of such form that it cannot be easily overturned, and of such construction that when it is overturned there can very little, if any, ink escape from the same; the device being provided with a closed supply-reservoir and a small pen-supply Well into which only such a quantity of ink from the reservoir can be drawn as needed, thus keeping the ink clear and clean and preventing evaporation and waste by overturning and spilling.
With these ends in view-my invent-ion consists in certain novel features of construction Vand combinations of parts, more fully described hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a front perspective view of my complete device, and Fig. 2 a vertical crosssection of the same.
The article as shown is preferably formed as one body or Within a single inclosing-casing, a; but of course different parts of the article can be formed separately and then assembled to form the complete device, so that they can be separately removed for cleansing or when broken.
The inkstand consists of the main portion or body a, of any suitable and desirable shape and dimensions, and preferably hollow or provided with a chamber, b, a main supply-reservoir, c, (preferably formed or cast with the body 61,) located upon the rear portion of the upper side of the body and extending across and a suitable distance above the same, and provided with an opening, (Z, normally closed,
through which the reservoircan be filled with e. A cut-off valve or gate, g, is located in the duct f, just below the well ef, and is provided with a stem, h, extending out through the front side of the article, where it is provided with a knob or thumb-piece, by which t-he valve can be operated to close or open the duct, and thus cut off or open the flow of ink into the well. The well extends down into the chamber h, and at its upper portion is provided with one or more apertures, t', for the escape of ink into the reservoir or chamber b when the well is tipped or when the tube f is left open too long and the well overflows. As shown, the top wall of the body a forms the bottom of the supply-reservoir and the well is supported or extends down from said wall.
The great utility and advantages of the herein described construction are obvious. The ink is not Wasted by evaporation and is kept clean and from becoming thick, as it is only drawn from the reservoir into the well as needed.
Of course it is understood that the invention is not limited to any particular size or shape.
l. An inkstand consisting, essentially, of a hollow body, a normally-closed supply-reservoir upon the rear portion of its top wall, an ink-well depending into the body from the front portion of its top wall, a tube extending from the bottom of the supply-reservoir to the bottom of the well, and a valve to close or open the tube and provided with a stem extending` to the exterior of the body, substantially as described.
2. An inkstand Consisting, essentially, of a hollow body, mi ink-supply reservoir upon the Same, an ink-Well depending into the interior of the same below the plane of the reservoir and provided with Ln ink-overflow aperture near its top opening into the body, a tube loezt-ted in the body and extending from the bottom of thereservoir into thebottom of the well, :i` eut-ofl` Valve in the tube, :und :t valvestem to turn the Smile, extending to the front exterior of the body and provided with ahead, substantially as described.
In lresiimony that I claim the foregoing as I5 my own I affix my Signature in presence of two witnesses.
STEPHEN G. lALl) \VIN.
