UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
CHARLES DE ROBERTS, OF ALBION, NEBRASKA.
INKSTAND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 250,213, dated November 29, 1881,
Application filed July 26, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OHAELEs DE ROBERTS, of Albion, in the county of Boone and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and Improved Inkstand, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved inkstand which closes itself automatically, and can be opened very conveniently and rapidly.
The invention consists in an ink-well resting on a base, and provided with a lid or cover attached to the upper end of a bell-crank lever pivoted in the base, the lower end of which bell-crank lever rests on one end of a lever pivoted to the under side of the base, and provided at the other end with a knob projecting above the top of the base, which knob is depressed by the hand when the cover is to be raised.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved inkstand. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The ink-well A rests on the base B, near the rear end of the same, and is provided with a cover or lid, 0, which is fastened to the upper end of a bell-crank lever, D, pivoted on the base B behind the ink-well, and moving in slots or recesses E. The lower arm of the bellcrank lever D is provided with a hook, F, engaging with a hook, F, at the rear end of a lever, G, pivoted in a longitudinal groove, a, on the under side of the base B, and reaching to the front end of the base B. A rod, H, is pivoted to the front end of the lever G, extends up through an aperture in the base, and has a knob, J, attached to its upper end.
The cover or lid 0 is preferably lined with rubber or cork, so as to form a close joint and prevent it from breaking the ink-well A, or being broken itself when it drops upon the ink-well. A pen-rack, K, is provided 011 the base B. In this case twoink-wells, A and A, are arranged on one base, but a single inkwell will be constructed in the same manner.
The operation is as follows: It the cover of one of the ink-wells is to be raised, the writer presses on'the corresponding button J with the lower part of the inner side of the hand, holding the pen as shown in Fig. 1. By depressing the knob or button J in the manner described the front end of the lever G is lowered, the rear end of the same is raised, and this causes the lower end of the bell-crank lever D to he raised, and the cover G swings outward, as indicated by the arrow at in Fig. 3. As soon as the hand is raised from the knob J the cover 0 will swing back upon the ink- Well A by its own weight, and will close the ink-well, at the same time raising the button J. The ink-well is thus closed automatically, and will al ways remain closed, except when the pen is being dipped into the ink. The rapid evaporation of the ink is thus prevented, and dirt, flies, 81 0., cannot get into the ink-well.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In an inkstand, the combination, with the ink-well A and the base B, provided with the slot E and the longitudinal groove a, of the cover 0, the be1l-crank lever 1), provided with hook F, the lever G, provided with hook F, the rod H, and the knob J, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
CHARLES DE ROBERTS.
