AUTOMATIC FEED-RESERVOIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 609,755, dated August 23, 1898.
Application filed March I4, 1898.
To all whom it may'conoern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW P. CHAPIN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Automatic Feed-Reservoirs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to reservoirs or receptacles having an automatic feed; and the object of the invention is the construction of an apparatus of the class above referred to in which is embodied new and useful means for governing the outlet from said reservoir or receptacle and in means forrefillin g the latter.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for always keeping the contents of the reservoir which may descend into the trough-like base free from impurities.
This invention consists in the construction set forth in the accompanying specification and fully pointed out in the claims forming part thereof.

Referring now to the drawings, A represents a reservoir or receptacle for either fluids or any finely-comminuted solids, and it may be made of metal or any other suitable material. Said receptacle may be made of any convenient shape, though most commonly it would have the form substantially as shown in the drawings-viz., the neck B, forming part thereof, would be of considerably smaller diameter than the body of the receptacle and, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, would be secured in any suitable manner to the base 0. Said base may be made of the same material as the said reservoir and may be circular in form or otherwise and made cup-shaped or provided with a trough extending either entirely, as shown, or partially around said neck B. In any event the depth of said trough, which is indicated by a, must exceed slightly the height of an opening I), made through the wall of the said neck B, which opening provides means of communication between said reservoir and said trough a in the base 0, and said Serial No. 673,715. on) nioclelJ reservoir has no opening except said opening 1) within the trough or through the bottom of the said base 0, as hereinafter described. Means for regulating the area of said opening I) are provided by fitting over said neck B a closely-fitting ring D, having an opening d therein coinciding in area to the opening I), and by sliding said ring circumferentially around said neck B said opening d may be moved more or less out of coincidence with said opening I), and the latter thus reduced in height, and the depth of the contents of the reservoir which will be permitted to flow into said trough a thus be regulated, as it is well known that in devices of this kind the contents of a tight inverted reservoir cannot rise above the height of the opening in the base thereof. By turning said ringD so that it will completely close the opening I) none of the contents will flow into the said trough in the base 0. By making the diameter of the reservoir A above the base 0 greater than the diameter of said base the contents of said res ervoir lying in said trough a are protected from any impurities that might fall on said reservoir from above. If said reservoir is made of metal, as shown in the drawings, it is preferable to form a bead f in the neck B, above the edge of the ring D, to hold the lat ter in place. Means for filling the said receptacle A through the bottom of the base 0 are constructed as follows and clearly illustrated in Fig. 2:
A cone g is secured to the inner surface of the base in a position substantially central therewith, and the top of said cone is out 01f at g anda hole made through the base 0 within the limits of the base of said cone g, thus providing an opening into the neck B of the reservoir. A second cone h is provided, which is adapted to fit over said cone g, as shown, and in the apex of said cone 7?. adepending wire m is secured, which has a ball on or other enlargement secured to thelower end thereof. Said wire passes through a piece of metal 0, secured to the inside of the cone g, which serves as a guide for the wire m and prevents the cone h from dropping into the reservoir A when the latter is turned upside down to be refilled. When said reservoir is reversed, the cone h drops inward toward the center of the reservoir to the extent" permitted by the ball m on the end of the wire m, and a fluid substance can then be poured into the reservoir, which when filled is reversed, and the cone h falling onto the cone 9 said fluid will seal the lower edge or base of the cone h, and thus prevent the escape of the contents through the cone g.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A reservoir, a base for supporting said reservoir, there being an aperture through the Wall of said reservoir lying wholly below the upper surface of said base, a part moV- top whose largest diameter is greater than the diameter of said base, there being an aperture in the wall of said reservoir lying wholly below the upper surface of said base, a part -movab1e on said reservoir, whereby the height of said aperture may be decreased, a troughlike depression in said base communicating with the interior of the reservoir, and a valve in said base through which said reservoir may be filled, and which is adapted to be closed by the contents of said reservoir, substantially as described.
3. The combination-of the reservoir A, having the neck B, a base 0 on which said neck rests for supporting said reservoir, a troughlike depression in said base, there being an aperture in said neck B, com m'unicating with said trough-like depression, and a part movable on said neck whereby the height of said aperture may be regulated, substantially as described.
