A R M R E S T SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 403,652, dated May 21, 1889.

Application filed November 24, 1888. Serial No. 291,827. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALBERT B. DICK, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, and a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Arm-Rests, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the arm-rest in one position and by dotted lines indicating it in another position. Fig. 2 is an under side view, the base being part-1y broken away. Fig. 3 is a side elevation. Fig. 4 is an end elevation.

In writing in thick bookssuch as ledger-s and record-booksit is found desirable to have a support for the arm when writing on the lower lines of the page.

The object-of this invention is to provide an arm rest or support with improved devices by which its height-can be adjusted to suit the thickness of the book to be written in, which I accomplish as illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter described. \Vhat I claim as new will be pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, A represents the base, which in use rests on the desk or table and on which the lower end of the book to be written in rests.

B is the arm-rest.

C O are two parallel rods which support the arm-rest B. Each red O, as shown in Fig. 4, has its ends bentat right angles to the main portion, the lower end being bent in the opposite direction from the upper end. The lower bent portion of each rod 0 is inserted in a hole in the base A and is held therein by a pin which fits into a groove in the end of the red, as indicated in dotted lines at a in Fig. 4. The upper bent portion of each rod G is placed in a bearin g, c, secured to the under side of the arm-rest B, and has a circular rack,b, secured 011 its end.

D is a rock-shaft which is mounted in bearings g, secured to the under side of the armrest B. The end of the shaft D projects be yond the edge of the arm-rest B and is bent to form a handle, 6. This rock-shaft D is also provided with two arms, f, adapted to engage with the pawls (Z and lift them out of engagement with the racks Z). The bearings g for the rock-shaft D are located near the arms f,

to prevent any endwise movement of the rockshaft, and each is provided with a shoulder, against which shoulders the arms f strike, limiting the rotary movement of the rockshaft.

h h are two pins or stops secured to the base A, against which the rods C C strike, limiting the descent of the arm-rest B.

In use the base A is to be placed on the desk or table and the lower end of the book to be written in placed thereon. The armrest B can be raised to the level of the page to be written on by simply lifting it, the paral lel rods 0 keeping it parallel with the base A, as shown in Fig. 3, and the arm-rest is antomatically locked in the position to which it is raised by the engagement of the pawls cl with the racks Z) on the ends of the parallel rods 0, as shown in Fig. 3.

\Vhen it is desired to lower the arm-rest B, the pawls (Z are disengaged from the racks b by pressing down on the handle 6, which rocks the shaft D, causing the arms f to lift the pawls (l. The arm-rest B can then be lowered to any desired position. \V hen the pressure is removed from the handle 6, the springpawls (Z automatically engage with the racks I) and lock the arm-rest B in the desired position.

The arm-rest B furnishes a firm support for the arm, because the book rests on the base A, and it can be readily and quickly adjusted, as above described, to suit a book of any thickness.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A base, A, adapted to be placed beneath a book, and an arm-rest, B, in combination with parallel rods C C, bent at right angles at their opposite ends, which are pivoted one to the base and the other to the armrest, racks l), and pawls (Z, substantially as specified.

2. A base, A, adapted to be placed beneath a book, and an arm-rest, B, in combination with parallel rods O (l, bent at right angles at their opposite ends, which are pivoted one to the base and the other to the arnrrest, racks b, pawls (Z, and rock-shaft D, having arms f, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
