HAND-REST.
, SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 399,266, dated March12, 1889. Application filed November 27, 18Ii8. Serial No. 291,979. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, ERLE S. HULL, acitizen the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand-Rests; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.
My invention is designed more particularly the for use. by persons whose work involves the use of large account and record books, my improvedhand-rest being used to support the hand while writing on the lower portion of the pages.
The invention will be understood by the following description and an inspection of the .accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of an accountants table having one part of my improved hand-rest applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectionofthe same. Fig. 3 is a perspective of the rest detached from the table. Fig. 4 is a perspective of the entire rest applied to a table. Fig. 5 is a perspective of a bar used to support the top board of the rest. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the entire rest.
A is the bottom of the rest. This is adapted to rest upon the front B of the drawer B of the table 0 and engage at its front beneath the top 0 of the table C when the drawer is partially drawn out. Cleats A A may be applied lengthwise to the lower side of the bottom A, and provided at their rear. ends with projections A A which latter extend edge of the top 0', so that the rear of the bottom A may rest against the front edge of the top 0 of the table C. The bottom A thus virtually forms a continuation of the top C of the table C" and. constitutes a satisfactory rest to be used in connection with sheetsand books when not too thick. The cleats A A may be provided with notches A A along their-lower edges, which notches receive the front Bof the drawer B, whereby said bottom A is held more firmly. Said notches may or'm ay not be of different States, residing at Chicago, in
1 may be raised or lowered by raising and loweri ing the corresponding end of the bottom A. F is a yoke applied to the upper surface of bottom A, and extending around the edges of the latter, so that it is held to said bottom, but may he slid to and fro on the same. Two ears, F, rise from said yoke at asuflicient distance from each other to receive the end of the top E between them. A bolt, F extends through said ears and top and secures the latter to the yoke, thus forming a hinge-joint. G is a yoke similar to the yoke F, and has ears G similar to the ears F. G is a roller mounted between the ears G. This yoke G is applied to the bottom A behind the yoke F and under the top E, so as to support the may also be shift-ed to and rear end of the top E is Shifting the yoke F shifts projections A A to extend beneath the front edge of the table-top, and having notches A on its lower side to receive the front of the drawer of the table, substantially as described.
A hand-rest, A, having at its rear end projections to extend beneaththe front edge of the table-top, and having notches on its lower side to receive the front of the drawer the bottom of the book. The opposite end I may be omitted of the table, and a'top, E, hinged by its front end upon, the bottom A, and a shifting support for said top E, located between the letter In testimony whereofl affix my signature, and the bottom A, substantially asshown and in presence of two witnesses, this 21st day of described. Y November, in the'year-1888.
3. A hand-rest, A, having at its rear end 5 projections to extend beneath the front edge of the table-top, and having notches on its lower side to receive the front of the drawer \Vitnesses: of the table, and a. top, E, hinged by its front J. HULL, end uponthe bottom A, substantially as shown CYRUS KEHR. 10' and described.
