JAMES T. VATSON, OF RICHMOND, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR 'lO HIMSELF AND CHARLES W. WOOLEN, OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN GATE-HINGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. A0,3l4, dated October 13, 1863.
To aLZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES T. WATSON, of the city of Richmond, in the county of Wayne and State of Indiana, have invented a new and nsefnl Improvement in Gate-Hinges, designed to remedy the swagging of gates or the posts to which gates are attached, enabling a person to keep his gates righted by regulating the hinges; and I do hereby declare that the following is a fnll, clear, and exact description ofthe construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure lisa perspective View of a gale hung with these hinges, and Figs. 2 and 3 being the hinge and fastening.
The natnre of my invention consists in the employment of a cap or gnide and set-screw, to hold one wing ofthe hinge to its place, the other wing of said hinge being made fast to the post or to the gate.
To enable others skilled in the art to malte and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
LetterA, Fig. 9, is a wing', (similar to the i halt' of an ordinary hinge,) which is permanently fastened on the post or on the gate.
Letter B is an elongated wing, hinged to the wing A at O.
Letter D, Fig. 3, is a cap, under which the elongated wing ofthe hinge slides.
Letter E, Fig 3, is a set-screw, which holds the wing B to its place.
vIhe cap, Fig. 3, is permanently attached to the gate or to the post, as desired, and the elongated wing slipped in, whenit is fastened to its place by the set-screw E.
It will be seen that it' the gate or post swags it may be remedied by loosening the wing B, and setting it longer or shorter, as the case may be, or taking the gate entirely off without disturbing the hinges.
That I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Holding the wing B to its place by the cap D, and setlscrew E, as described, and for the purpose set forth.
