ROOFING TONGS.
' No. 401,963. PatentedApr, 2s, 1889;
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
ROBERT B. MCOONNELLOF PADUOAH, KENTUCKY, ASSIGNOR TO G. DAVIS, OF SAME PLACE.
ROOFING-TONGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 401,963, dated April 23, 1889.
Application filed February 4, 1889.
To all whom it may con/cern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT B. McCoN- NELL, of Paducah, in the county of McCracken and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roofing- Tongs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in rooiing-tongs, the object of the same being to provide grips with adjustable gage-plates secured thereto, so that the edges of sheet metal can be readily turned to various sizes.
A further object is to provide a device of the above character which shall be simple and economical in construction and durable and efficient in use; and with these ends in view Vmy invention consists in the certain features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be herein after fully described, and pointed out in t-he claim.-
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention. Fig. '2 is a top plan view with the handles'vertical, and Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the tongs.
A and B represent the lower ends of the tongs, to which are secured the blades C and D, respectively. The blade C is secured in a vertical position relatively to the handles E thereof, and is provided with the circularshaped recesses F, formed near each end thereof. Each recess is adapted to receive the gage-plates Gr, each of which is adjust Serial No. 298,614. (No model.)
ably secured therein by means of the bolts H, rigidly secured to the backs of the plates and passing through the lower blade, C, to which they are adjustably secured by means of the jaw-nuts I. The plates G are provided with the spurs K, adjacent to their edges. The gage-plates are adjusted by slackening the jaw-nuts I.Y The plates can then be rotated and the spurs K brought to or from the front edges of the blades at any distance to correspond with the size of the edge desired to be turned on the tin, which varies from one-half to two and one -half inches. The nuts are then screwed up to lock the plates in adjusted y position. The upper blade, D, is set at right angles to the blade C for the purpose of permitting the free movement of the gage-plates and spurs.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a gripping device, the combination, with the lower blade having circular recesses formed therein and gage-plates having an eccentric projection adj ustably secured therein, of an upper blade adapted t'o engage said lower blade, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ROBERT B. MCOONNELL.
