IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR POINTING PICKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,467, dated February 4, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALPHEUS B. OoRBY, of Binghamton, in the county of Broorne and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Picket-Pointer, of which the following is a specification:

My invention has for its object to furnish an improved machine for pointing pickets, which shall be simple in construction, convenient in use, and effective in operation, enabling the pickets to be pointed quickly and accurately; and it consists in the base or stand, lever, knife, and adjustable holder, in combination with each other, and in the combination of adjustable gages with said holder, knife, lever and base, as hereinafter more fully described.
A is the base or frame of my improved ma chine, which is made in about the form shown in Fig. l-that is to say, with an upwardly projecting part to receive the knifelever B, which is pivoted to it with a bolt. To the le "er B, near its pivoting-point, is securely attached a knife, 0, which is made with a con cave or inclined edge, so that it may operate upon the picket with a drawing cut. The base frame A is also made with a seat to receive the angular picket-holder D, which is secured in its seat by a screw-bolt passing in from the lower side of the said base A, and entering the said holder, so that by loosening the said bolt the holder D may be adjusted at such an angle with the plane of the knife 0 as will cause the pickets to be pointed at any desired ta per. E is a plate, fitted upon the outer side of the upwardly-projecting part of the holder D 5 and upon its lower end is formed a point which passes through a slot in the lower end of the said part, and projects within the holder so as to receive the lower end of the picket and stop it in proper position to be operated upon by the knife 0. The stop or gage E is secured to the holder D, by a screw which passes through a slot in the gage E, and screws into a hole in the holder D. F is a plate, [slotted longitudinally and secured to the holder D by the same screw that secures the gage E. The plate F has a point or finger formed upon its upper edge, which passes over the upper edge of the holder D, so as to point to the picket, to gage the position into which it should be placed to receive the cut. Either orboth the gages E F may be adjusted by I simply loosening the screw by which they are secured in place. In using the machine for pointing square pickets the holder D is adjusted at the proper angle, and the gage E is adjusted at the proper point. The picket is then placed in the angle of the holder D and pushed down till stopped by the gage E. The lever B is then pressed down, cutting one side of the said picket. The picket is then turned one-quarter of a revolution and a cut is made upon the second side, and so on, the beginning of each previous out serving as a guide for beginning the next out. In the case of flat pickets the holder D is adjusted at the desired angle and the gage E at the desired point. The picket is then laid in the holder D, slipped down to the gage E, and the cut is made. The picket is then scribed at right angles with its length at the point where the knife entered the wood. The picket is then replaced in the holder, moved down to the knife, and the gage F is adjusted to the mark upon the picket. The picket is then turned a half revolution, the point where the knife entered the wood is brought to the gage F, and the cut is made. The machine is now adjusted-the first out being made by the gage E and the second cut by the gage F.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The grooved and inclined holder D, secured at one end to the baseA by means of a screwbolt, in combination with the knife-lever B pivoted to the raised part of the base, all as Witnesses: B.
