SAW-SET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 591,478, dated October 12, 1897.
Application filed January 7.1397. Serial No. 618.357. (No model.)
To aZZ whom .it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES A. KIDWELL, a citizen of the United'States, residing at Gorton Heights, in the county of Centre and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Sets; and I do hereby declare the following -to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,
such as will'enable others skilled in the art to which it a'ppert-ains to make and use the same.
This invention has reference to a novel construction in a saw-set; and it has for its object to provide a novel, inexpensive, and du rable device of this character.
The invention consists win the features of construction hereinafter fully described and with an overhanging guide 2 and at its other end with the uprising overhanging arms 3, and upon which the die 4 is supported. The said die 4 is provided at its lower end with the guide 5, that is situated within an upright opening 6 in the body portion 1. The said die is connected at its upper end with an operating-handle 7, thatis mounted upon the arms 3 and which serves to raise and depress the said die. The particular construction for operating the die consists of the handle 7, pivoted upon the arms. 3, andto which the upper end of the die 4is eccentrically pivoted. In this way it is seen that as the handle 7 is turned upon its pivot the die is raised and depressed. The body portion 1 is cut away just below the die 4 to provide the socketS,
into which the-said die fits- Situated within an opening just in the rear of the socket 8 is a gage-block 9, that is pivoted upon a nut 10,
carried by a screw-threaded bolt 11, that is situated within a' recess in the said body portion 1. block 12, that is secured by a screw 13, while the said bolt 11 is also provided with a milled wheel 14, by means of which it can be turned to advance or retract the gage-block 9. The
The rear end of said bolt is held in a vertical movement of the die is controlled by a pivoted finger 15. This finger 15 is pivoted between the arms 3 and has an extension 16 at its other end that is situated Within a rece ss 17 in the rear side of the die. An adj usting-screw 18 passes through the body portion 1 and engages the lower face of the finger 15 to control the downward limit of the same and consequently the downward movement of the die toregulate the set of the saw-teeth. The guide 2 is provided with a plurality of screw-threaded openings 19,- that receive the screw-threaded bolt 20, by means of which the saw is clamped in position, and which, furthermore, allows saws of various widths to be held in position.
It is seen from the foregoing description that theteeth of the saw can be set quickly and efficiently, and that, furthermore, by means of the adjustable gage-block 9 and adj ustable die 4, together with the adjustable set-screw 20, that not only can saws varying in width be accommodated but saws varying in width can be set at the desired angle. The device is simple and made of few parts, and, furthermore, the devices for adjusting the same can be easily manipulated, while the whole device is inexpensive, comparatively small, and effective.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A saw-set consisting of a body portion having an overhanging guide between which and said body portion the saw is to be inserted, a pivoted gage-block pivoted Within an opening in said body portion, a die mounted above said gage-block, and devices for operating said die.-
2. A saw-set consisting. of a body portion having a guide, an opening in said body por* tion, a rotatable screw-threaded bolt situated within said opening and provided with devices for turning the same and with a nut, a gage-block pivoted to said nut, and an adjustable die and devices for operating the same,
3. A saw-set consisting of a body portion having an adjustable gage-block andaguide, a die and devices for operating the same, a slot in said die, and a pivoted finger having an extension situated within said slot, and a set-screw for controlling the extent of move- In testimony whereof I have signed this ment of said pivoted finger. specification in the presence of two subscrib- 1o 4. InasaW-set,abodyportiomagage-block, ing witnesses. carried by said body portion, an upright 5 opening adjacent said gage-block, a die and JAMES kIDVELL' devices for operating the same, and a guide \Vitnesses: upon the lower end of said die and situated GEO. XV. BRETT,
within said upright opening. JACOB BEIGHTOL.
