UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
OLAUS P. SCHMIDT, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
GAGE.
EPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 349,523, dated September 21, 1886.
Application filed March 25, 1886.
Be it known that I, OLAUS P. Sonnrnr, a citizen-of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Iin provement in Gages, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improvement in gages for marking the ends of boards and it consists in the peculiar constructionand combination of devices, that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims. 1
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sec- A represents the frame, which is composed of the horizontal guideway B, having the depending ends 0 arranged at right angles thereto, which latter ends are each provided on oneside with a horizontal flange plate or foot, D, and a vertical depending flange, E. The said vertical flange projects below the plane of the horizontal flange, so as to bear against the end of the board when the flanges or feet D are placed upon the upper side of the board. The guideway B is provided with a longitudinal vertical slot, F, which extends throughout the length of the guideway, and is intersected by a horizontal transverse longitudinal slot, G. In the slots G and F in the guideway works a movable head, H, through which passes a vertical blade or marker, I, which is adjustable in the said head, and may be secured therein at any desired adjustment by means of a setscrew, K. On the outer side of the guideway B is secured a suitable handle, L. As the slots F G intersectwith each other-,they' form two branches for each slot. The head H is made in the shape of a Roman cross with four branches or arms, the horizontal arms fitting in the branches of slot G, while the vertical arms fit in the branches of slot F, the center of the head being located directly at the point where the slots intersect. My invention is 7 adapted particularly for Serial No. 196,605. '(No model.)
marking the ends of boards that are used for siding, but is adapted to be used for other purposes as well. i
The flanges or feet D are placed on the upper side of the board a, with the depending flanges E bearing on one end thereof, and a second board, I), which is to be cut so as to fit on the end of the board a, is placed over the latter so as to overlap its end, and the head is then drawn across the guideway and across the board I), with the sharp edge of the knife hearing on the upper side of the said board, and thereby marking it directly in line with the end of the snbjacent board a. By means of this peculiar construction of the gage it is adapted for marking boards either at right angles or at any other desired angle, and enables boards to be matched or fitted together perfectly with great ease and rapidity.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. The combination of the frame guideway B,provided with the vertical longitudinal slot F and the horizontal longitudinal slot G, intersecting the slot F, the depending ends 0, having the horizontal flanges D projecting laterally'from one side, and the vertical flanges E,with the head H,working in the slots F and G, and the vertical adjustable cutter or blade I, secured in the head, substantially as described.
2. A. gage having the guideway 13, to which the marking-knife is attached, the ends 0, depending at right angles from the guideway, the horizontal flange plate or foot D, projecting out from one side of the ends, and a vertical depending flange, E, on the ends 0, located below the plane of the flange D, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
