UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HORACE NV. MESSER, OF BERLIN, ONTARIO, CANADA.
SHIRT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 401,572, dated April 16, 1889.
Application filed December 24, 1888. Serial No. 294,471.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HORACE WVARNER MES- SER, manufacturer, of the town of Berlin, in the county of Waterloo, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Shirts, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to design a shirt having the opening at the back,in which the neckband and shoulders are self-adjusting to suitany variation in the size of the wearers neck or shape of his shoulders; and it consists in the peculiarities of construction, all as more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 is a perspective back View of a shirt made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the back yokes thrown back.
In the drawings, A is the neckband, and B the back yoke.
O is an under yoke attached to the backD of the shirt by the line of stitching E.
The under yoke, O, is not connected with the front of the shirt, butis left perfectly free above the line of stitching E. A back neckband, F, is connected to the top of the under yoke, O, and has preferably a button hole, G, made in it to receive the stud for the back of the collar.
The neckband A does not extend entirely (Model) around the neck, butis completed by the band F, the two hands, however, being independent of each other. When the back of the collar is attached at G and its front ends to the front stud or button, the back ends of the neckbandA are free and permit the shoulders of the shirt to adjust themselves to suit the shape of the shoulders of the wearer of the shirt, and the opening in the back of the shirt is closed by the under yoke, O.
I deem it important that the back yokes B B be attached to the body of the shirt along their bottom edge, whereby I dispense with the button-holes in said back yokes.
WVhat I claim as my invention is- A shirt open at the back and provided with the under yoke, and back yokes independent of the under yoke, and having its neckband formed in. two separate independent parts, one part permanently connected to the under yoke and bridging the space between the ends of the part of the neckband attached to the back yokes and the other to the back yokes, independent of the under yoke, substantially as shown and described.
Berlin, December 3, 1.888.
HORACE W. MESSER.
In presence of- W. H. NowLBY, R. O. CLEMENT.
