NITED STATES GUSTAVUS HAMEL, OF DE SOTO, MISSOURI.
SCHOOL DESK AND SEAT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 400,078, dated March 26, 1889.
Application filed October 3, 1888. Serial No. 287,065. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GUSTAVUS HAMEL, of De Soto, in the county of Jefferson and State of Missouri, have invented anew and Improved School Desk and Seat, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to improvements in school desks and seats, such as shown and described in Letters Patent No. 318,183, granted to me May 19, 1885.
The object of the present invent-ion is to provide anew and improved school desk and seat, which is very simple and durable in construction in which the seat noiselessly slides back under the desk or is easily moved Figure 1 is a perspective View of the im-.
provement. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of the lower part of the improvement, and Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the upper end of the brace.
The desk A is supported by two corner legs or standards,'B, which are slightly i11- clined, and are secured to the floor by means of angle-irons C. An inclined brace-bar, D,
' is secured at its upper end to each leg or standard B, at or near the middle, and its lower end is secured to the floor below the desk A. The upper end, E, of each brace D projects slightly to the front of the standard B, and carries a pin, F, extending inward an d being covered by rubber or other suitable material. \Vhen the seat is in a horizontal clearly shown in Fig. 2.
extends from the arm H to the arm J and serves as a stop when the seat is folded up.
Said bar L then comes in contact with the stoppin F. The seat-brackets I support in the usual manner the seat N, and the back 0 of the seat is secured to the standards or legs B. YVhen the seat is in a horizontal position, the hooks G prevent a further downward swinging motion of the seat-brackets I as the said hooks G engage the stoppins F, as is hen the operator desires to throw up the scat, he presses against the seat or seatbrackets I, so that the latter slide back into the position shown in dotted lines. This rearward swinging motion of the seat-brackets I is limited by the bars L striking against the stop-pins F. As thelatter are covered with rubber or other suitable soft material, all noise is prevented in folding up or closing the seat.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a combined desk and seat, the combination, with the desk-supporting standards I5, of the braces D, secured to the floor at their lower ends and at their upper ends to the standards 13, and carrying the pins F on their inner faces, the angle-iron O, secured to the lower end of the desk-standard, and the seat- GUSTAVUS HAMEL.
Vitnesses:
O. M. MUNROE, WM. F. EDINGER.
