UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH I-I. WALKER, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO THE POWVERS & IVALKER CASKET COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
BU RlAL-CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 399,951, dated March 19, 1889.
Application filed August 1, 1885.
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J osnrn H. VVALKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent new and useful Improvements in Burial- Cases, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its object to provide a burial-casket in which the top panels are hinged to the case in such a manner that they may be folded back entirely away from the top of the case, and when closed will show but one joint. This I accomplish in the manner and by the means hereinafter more fully described, and then set forth in the claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a burialcase constructed in accordance with my in vention, with the panels opened; and Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same on lines 00 a: of Fig. 1, the dotted lines showing the position of the closed panel and the semicircular dotted lines showing the distance traversed by each leaf of the panel.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout both views.
A represents the shell or main body of the case, which may be of any required form. Upon the top of the shell A is a cove of the ordinary form, which I have shown by O. The
top panel is shown by C 0. Each part 0 is Serial No. 281,684. (No model.)
hinged to the bar or flap D at E, which flap D is hinged to the case or cove at E. This 3 panel may be sustained when open by the supports G G. and State of Michigan, have invented certain These supports, however, may be dispensed with. When the panel is open, it presents the appearance shown in Fig. 2, and in closing each partof the panel passes over on an arc of a circle, and the panel and hinges drop into the position shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 2.
B represents a sliding glass beneath the top panel.
The folding panel may be of any required length up to the length of the case.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to have invented, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a burial-casket, the combination, with the shell or body thereof, of a top panel or cover constructed in two leaves or parts, each leaf hinged at or about its under central portion to a connecting-flap, which flap is hinged to the body of the case, whereby, when the casket is closed, but one central joint is exposed, all as and for the purpose described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH H. XVALKER. [L. s.] NVitnesses:
GEORGE GLAPPERTON, EDWARD TAGGART.
