UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY T. LOOMIS, OF ONEIDA, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE NATIONAL CASKET COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
CASKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 591,781, dated October 12, 1897.
Application filed September 1, 1897. Serial No. 650,225. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY T. LOOMIS, of
' Oneida, in the county of Madison, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Caskets, of which the following, taken in connect-ion with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to burial cases or caskets in which the opening is closed in the ordinary manner by a removable panel normally supported by a cove secured to the casket-bod y and the sliding or removable glass is supported in the usual manner by the cove, or partly by the cove and partly by that part or section of the cover which is not usually opened. v
My object is to provide such a casket with shelves independent of the panel, but covered or inclosed by it when the casket is closed, and which when said panel is removed can be opened outwardly upon their hinge connection to the cove for ornamental elfects, being then usually supported by the cove, and also for holding candelabra or bouquetholders, and for other purposes, as well as to give a more open appearance to the casket.
It is constructed as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1, is a top plan of a casket closed. Fig. 2 is a like view of the same with the panel removed and the shelves opened out, the dotted lines indicating their position when closed. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on line ac 00, showing the shelves inclosed by the panel. Fig. 4 is a cross-section on line y 1 showing the panel removed and shelves opened.
A is the body of the casket, of any desired size or form, and 2 is the ordinary cove, secured upon and around its upper edge. Upon this cove a removable panel 3 is suitably mounted, here shown as extending over only a part of the length of the casket, but which can be of any length up to the full length of the top of the casket. A sliding glass 4 is also shown as suitably mounted in the cove and the stationary part of the casket-cover, but it can be omitted or a single stationary piece used, when the entire cover constitutes a single-movement panel.
Shelves 5, of a suitable construction and provided with suitable ornamental tuftin g or other optional decoration, are suitably hinged to the stationary cove, are entirely independ- 5 5 cut of the panel, and are not a part thereof, but are covered or inclosed by it when it is upon the casket. These shelves are adapted, when the panel is removed, to be opened outward to broaden the top of the casket, support floral decorations, bouquet-holders, candelabra, and for other purposes. These shelves are normally supported by their hinges, or may bear more or less upon the glass, and when opened out are supported by their hinges combined with their bearing upon the top of the cove. Their length is proportional to that of the removable panel up to the full length of the casket. They are only shown here as upon the sides, but it will be evident that they can be readily applied to one or both ends, andcan be of any design or size desired.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat cut, is
1. The combination with a casket-body, and its removable panel, or cover, of shelves hinged to the upper edges of the cove independent of the panel, but inclosed by it when folded in.
2. The combination with a casket-body, a cove permanently secured thereon, and a removable panel or cover, of shelves separated from the panel and hinged to said cove, and having a bearing thereon when opened out, and inclosed by the panel when folded in.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 27th day of August, 1897.
HARRY T. LOOMIS.
In presence of- J. A. BABOOCK, T. F. HAND.
