Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 28, 1917.
Application filed April 11, 1912, Serial No. 690,135. Renewed February 3, 1917. Serial No. 146,866.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, l/VILLIAM G. THOMP- sox, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Denver, State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burial-Caskets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates particularly to the construction of the type of casket known as couch caskets. The object of this invention is to provide a burial casket more attractive in appearance, convenient in use and economical of manufacture than those heretofore employed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification,
Figure 1 is a longitudinal front elevation view of my improved burial casket.
Fig. 2 is an end elevation illustrating the manner in which the casket lid is connected with the casket, the lid being shown in partly raised position.
Fig. 3 is a similar end elevation showing the lid fully opened.
Figs. rand 5 illustrate a difierent design of couch casket and lid, the open side of the casket being cut low, the lid being shown in partly raised and fully opened positions.
In these drawings the numeral 1 represents the casket proper, and 2 the lid or cover. A segment 4 of the front, and segments 3 of both ends of the casket are suitably connected together, and pivoted as by means of the hinges 5 to the adjacent portions of the ends of the casket, in such manner that when in closed position th connected, hinged members 3, 4 form a segmental front and ends of the casket and support the adjacent portions of the lid. Upon the segmental front at is pivoted the lid 2, as by the hinges 6. The lid may be provided with any unsuitable latch or fastening 7.
It is apparent that by the arrangement shown the lid of the casket may be folded out of view at the back of the casket, and that the segmental front and ends when thrown back to raised or open position constitute an upper vertical extension of the rear side of the casket. It is the custom to provide an ornamental lining or finish within the casket. In the type of couch casket now most commonly in use the lid being hinged upon the back is raised to an approximately vertical position and supported in that position when the casket is open. The inner side of the lid comprising a considerable area must therefore be richly trimmed or finished as it is wholly in view. With the disappearing lid which I employ it is only necessary to provide a neat and moon spicuous lining for the lid, the cost of manufacture being thus materially decreased. The appearance of a casket constructed in accordance with my invention is greatly enhanced and various modifications of design are readily adaptable to the principle disclosed. The segmental front and ends may be of any width desired or of any design, it being apparent that the result is attained by use of a doubly pivoted connection whereby the front of the lid is hinged upon the box portion of the casket in the upper horizontal plane thereof, approximately midway of the ends. I do not, therefore, wish to limit myself to the particular designs employed to illustrate my invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A burial casket comprising a box, including a segmental side member pivotally supported from the middle points of the upper edge of the ends of said box, and a lid hinged to said segmental side member upon the edge which is uppermost when the box is closed.
2. A burial casket comprising a box having two members with ends pivotally connected in approximately the uppermost horizontal and central vertical longitudinal planes of said box, and a lid pivoted upon the lesser member of said box.
