WRITING-TABLET.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 397,970, dated February 19, 1889.

To aZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN C. CHORPENNING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spring field, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vriting-Tablets; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

It is the object of my invent-ion to provide writing pads or tablets of such construction thatwhile they maybe used ind ividually in the ordinary way they may be also readily secured together in any desired order and number, and that any one of them may be easily removed for further use, reference, change in arrangement, or to be replaced by another tablet without disturbing or injuring the others.

IVriting-tablets are ordinarily of considerable weight and thickness, and it is essential to durability and convenience that the means for d etachabl y binding them together should be very strong, and should at the same time permit each tablet to be turned overbodily with as much freedom as a single leaf. To this latter end the construction should be such that all stiffness of what may be termed the hinge of the tablet is avoided. Tablets so constructed are of great convenience in classifying memoranda and accounts of all kinds and preserving them in durable and permanent but accessible form.

In order to make my invention more clearly understood, I have shown in the accompanying drawings means for carrying the same into effect.

Referring to the drawings, A indicates a writing-tablet bound between a front cover, a, and a back cover, Z), the latter of which is preferably the stiffer and stronger.

The holding and hinging devices for each tablet consist of a holding-plate, 18, secured firmly and strongly to the tablet, (by preference to the back cover, 1),) and a strip or strips, C, of leather or other strong and flexible material, which strips are attached by one end to the holding-plate of the bottom tablet or to the back piece of aprotecting-cover, are loosely connected with each tablet through the medium of its holding-plate, and are attached by the other end to the holding-plate of the topmost tablet or to thetop piece of the protecting-cover.

The plate B may consist of thin metal such as tin or stiif composition-secured to the cover I) by means of fingers f, cut out of, passing through, or soldered to said plate, passed through the cover, and bent down upon the inner face of the latter. At its upper end the holding-plate extends forward over the upper edge of the tablet, as indicated at e, and in some instances for a short distance downward upon the front of the tablet, as shown at e. The extension 6 may be for the full width of the tablet or for only a portion thereof, as indicated in Figs. 5 and 9. The extension 6' also may extend the full width of the tablet, as shown in Fig. 8, or may occur at intervals, as seen in Figs. 1 and l.

D is a retaining-piece, which,when the tablets are secured together, lies upon the top or outer side of the strip or strips 0. This piece is, in the construction shown in Figs. 1, 4, 8, and 9, formed in one piece with or permanently soldered to the holdingplate B. In such case the strips 0 are detachably secured at their ends to the holding-plate of the top or bottom tablet, or both, as by passing them through. slits in and wrapping them one or more ti mes around said plate or around the extension 0'; or the retaining-piece D may be separate from and detachably connected with the holding-plate B, as shown in Figs. 5, 6, and 7. In this case the ends of strip 0 may be secured, respectively, to the front and back leaves of a protecting-cover, 1', either permanently by pasting, as indicated in Figs. 6 and 7, or in any other suitable manner. In the construction illustrated by Fig. 9 theholdingplate does not extend across the whole back of the tablet, but is made in two or more pieces, one ofwhich is shown in said figure.

The manner of securing together and of separating two or more of the tablets is suiiiciently clear without further description, and it will be seen that while the tablets are capable of individual use they may be readily classified and bound together, but so that any one may be detached without disturbing or injuring the others, and that while bound together the tablets are so hing-ml that each is capable of being turned over bodily with as much freedom as a single leat'.

Having thus described my invention, what 1 claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is"

1. A writing-tablet provided with the hold ing-plate and the laterally-extending retaining piece or pieces D on the back of theholding-plate, and forming an opening or openings closed at each end, substantially as set forth. 2

substantially as described, whereby it may be connected and hinged with other tablets, substantially as set forth.
