ALBERT E. SIVIFT, OF BUFFALO, NEWV YORK.
PAPER-WEIGHT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 396,519, dated January 22, 1889.
Application filed May 14, 1888. $erial No. 273,771. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT E. SWIFT, of the city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement. in Paper- Veights, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to produce an inexpensive and attractive paper-weight, in connection with which pictures or photographs may be exhibited, and in which the pictures can be readily interchanged when desired.
The invention consists of the improvement which will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved paperweight. Fig. 2 is a cross-section thereof.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in both figures.
A represents a cylindrical box or casing constructed of tin or other sheet metal and which is closed at its open end by a cover, B. The rim of the latter completely incloses the sides of the box A, and is provided on its outer surface, at its center, with an annular bead or rim, 1).
G represents a weight or filling, of metal, cement, or other suitable heavy material, arranged in the box A, and whereby the device is properly weighted. The weight consists, preferably, of a cake of cement or other plastic material.
D D represent two removable rings applied to opposite ends of the casing A, and which are provided at their outer ends with inwardly-projecting annular flanges or rims, d d. The rings D D abut with their adj acent inner edges against the bead b, as shown. The bead I) also relieves the cylindrical surface of. the paper-weight and improves its appearance.
E E represent the removable pictures or photographs, which are arranged, respectively, between the ends of the casing A and the inner sides of the flanges or rims d d, the faces of the pictures being turned outward, so as to be exposed through the openings inclosed by the rings D D. Plates ff, of glass or other transparent material, are preferably interposed between the faces of the photographs E E and the flanges d 01, so as to protect the photographs. If preferred, amirror may be arranged in one side of the paperweight instead of a photograph or picture.
WVhen it is desired to interchange the pictures, the rings D D are removed from the casing A and the old pictures are taken out of the rings. The new pictures are then placed into the rings against the flanges cl d, and the rings are then applied to the ends of the casing.
It is obvious that my improved paperweight may also be used as an advertising medium by substituting cards bearing advertisements for the pictures or photographs.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination, with a box or casing, of a removable ring applied to one end of the box and provided with an inwardly proj ecting flange or rim, and a picture, mirror, or advertising-card arranged between the end of the casing and the flange of the ring, substantially as set forth.
2. In a paper-weight, the combination, with the inner body or casing, of removable rings applied to opposite ends of said casing and provided at their outer ends with inwardlyprojecting flanges or rims, and removable pictures, mirrors, or advertising-cards arranged between the ends of the casing and said flanges or rims and exposed through said rings, substantially as set forth.
3. In a paper-weight, the combination, with the box or casing A, containing a suitable weight or filling, C, and having a cover, B, of the removable rings D D, applied to opposite ends of the casing A and provided at their outer ends with inwardly-projecting flanges or rims d d, and removable pictures, mirrors, or advertising-cards E E, interposed between the ends of the casing A and the rims or flanges of said rings, substantially as set forth.
Witness my hand this 4th day of May, 1888.
ALBERT E. SWIFT.
Witnesses:
CARL F. GEYER, FRED. OGEYER.
