INVENTOR,
WITNESSES:
A TTORIVEYS SIEGMUND S'IIEGLITZ, OF NEIV YORK, N. Y.
BALL OF THREAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 395,636, dated January 1, 1889. Application filed August 9, 1888. Serial No. 282,316. (No model.)
To all zrhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIEGMUND STIEGLITZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful-Improvements in Balls of Thread, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in balls of thread, as set forth in the following specification and claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure '1. is a longitudinal. section of a ball of thread and a core. l ig. 2 is atransverse section of Fig.1. l ig. 3 is a perspective view of a core. Fig, 4 is a longitudinal section of amodification. Fig. 5 is a transverse section of Fig. l.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, the letter A indicates a core. 13 making the core tapering the ball of thread ll can hereadil slipped off the core. The core has a channel, The channel can he variously formed, as, for example, longitudinally, l ig. 1, or transversely, t. In forming the hall of thread the starting end D of the thread is placed in the channel (I, and the ball then formed by winding the thread about the core. The core is then removed from the ball, leaving the starting end 1) projecting from the interior of the ball or from the axial open passage in the ball, so thatportions of thread can be secured for use as desired by pulling upon the starting end D.
By drawing the thread from the interior of the ball the thread is removed without rotation or movement of the ball, and the thread in passing from the ball to the point of use is thus exposed to less friction and wear and risk of injury than if the thread were withdrawn from the exterior of the ball.
It is designed to place the balls on sale with the cores therein, so that the cores hold the thread from unwinding or entangling.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As a new'art-icle of manufacture, a ball of thread provided with a central core having a channel in which the starting or inner end of the thread is arranged, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
