Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 8, 119MB.
Application filed Kay 1, 1909. Serial No. 293,5575.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE OMELIAH, a citizen of the United States, residin at. New York city, in the State of New ork, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spools. of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved con struction of spool and the manner of making the same, said spools being adapted for reeling or winding ribbons and the like thereon. These spools have usually been made of 'pasteboard or fiber and considerable ditiicnlty has been encountered in quickly and economically uniting the disk ends to the tubular spindle, and the object of my invention is to provide for a simple, etficient and economical manner of uniting these parts, and broadly speaking, it con sists essentially in grinding down the ends of the tubular spindle so that the said reduced ends can be readily inserted through the central apertures of the disk, the projecting ends of the tubular spindles being then quickly and easily rolledback or expanded thereby rigidly unitingthe disks to the spindle.
The invention consists also in certain details of construction hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a spool constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail pers ective view of the spindle, the ends thereo being reduced ready to have the disks placed thereon, and Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the completed spool.
In constructing as 001 in accordance with my invention, I emp oy a tubular spindle A and circular end disks B, all of said arts being made of fiber or similar materia and the end disks are of course provided with .the usual central circular openings. The ends by any suitable grinding tool, said reduced ends being indicated at B, and these reduced ends are readily inserted through the central circular openings in the end disks and then by means of suitable rolling or expanding tools the ends of the disks are rolled back or turned over-in annular form and ex- "panded as indicated at B in Fig. 3 and in so doing a slight shoulder B is produced which arrests the inward movement of the disk and the expanded or rolled end firmly holds the disk in position upon the end of the spindle.
A spool constructed as herein shown and described is quickly, easily and cheaply made and when once made, all danger of the disks of the spindle are ground down or reduced down thereby reducing the exterior diameter of the end of the spindle, and fiber disks arranged upon the reduced ends of the spindle, the projecting portions of said spindle being rolled back over the adjacent edges of the disks, said rolling back serving to crowd the adjacent portions of the spindle upon the opposite sides of the disks whereby stop shoulders are produced, substantially as de-' scribed.
ordinance OMELIAH.
