Be it known that 1, JOHN SoMMnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Peoria, in the county of Peoria and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Reels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to reels, and relates particularly to that type of reel on which is wound barbed-wire during the operation of manufacture and subsequently shipped to jobbers and dealers.
Jne object of the invention is to provide a. reel of the character referred to, which is made entirely of metal to displace the ordinary wooden reels llli h are expensive, and in most instances cannot be used more than once; whereas, a metallic reel has the advantage of being used over and over again and thus decreasing the cost, which is an item of considerable moment in manufacture.

Figs. 3 and show modified forms of the end construction of the reel, the modification being directed particularly to the members which form the webs.

The reel comprises the two preferably rectangular shaped wire end members 1, 1. These end members are each preferably formed from a single piece of wire, of the proper gage, so as to have the four corners 2, 2, 2, 2.
The meeting ends 3 of the formed end members where they meetbeing butt welded, as shown.
The end members are connected by, preferably, four substantially U shaped wire bars or rods 4, which form the body of the reel on which the barbed-wire, or other material is wound. These bars or rods 4 have the straight parallel horizontal portions 5 and their opposite ends are bent at right angles and inclined slightly out of the perpendicular, as at 6, and where the bodies of the horizontal and angularly inclined portions of the bars or rods 4- unite depressions 7, are formed for purposes to be explained. The angularly inclined end portions 6 of said bars or rods 4- intersect the corners 2- of the end members 1, and are lap welded thereto, as shown.
The horizontal parallel portions 5 of the bars or rods -1- are connected, at their opposite ends by members 8. which are substantially star-shaped. These members are formed from a single strand of wire bent to produce the radially arranged twisted bodies 9, producing the end loops 01' eyes 10 through which the bars or rods 4 are passed and have a bearing, and the centrally or axially arranged opening 11 through which is inserted a spindle, not shown, which supports the reel when winding and unwinding the barbed-wire, wire or other material. The ends of the wire constituting the members meet and are butt welded, as at 12, as shown.
When manufacturing the article shown, it is preferable to weld end of. each bar or rod 4: to its respective corner 2 of an end member 1, and then weld the opposite ends of said bars or rods l to the opposite end member 1. Before this operation is completed the loops or eyes 10 of the members 8 are slipped over the bars or rods l, leaving said members on the bars or rods between their ends, but without being seated in the depressions 7. After the welding operation, at the points 2, which tends to separate the bodies 5 of said bars or rods 4 a distance slightly more than the distance between the centers of the diametrically opposed loops or eyes 10, the loops or eyes then are slid along the bodies 5 until they seat themselves in the depressions 7 which looks the members in position on said bars or rods 4 as will be understood, lending stability to the whole structulie' and providing webs to receive the supporting spindle.
lln the modified forms of the device show in Figs. 3 and 4:, the end members 1 are preferably circular in form instead of being rectangularly shaped as shown in Fig. 1, and said end members 1* are butt welded, as shown. The end members 1 are connected by the Lil-shaped wire bars or rods 4 which do not differ-from the construction shown in Fig. 1, and in the modified forms the ends of said wire bars or rods 4% are butt welded to the end portions, as shown.
lln Fig. 3, the webs for the reel comprise the wire members 13 which are bent to form the circular central portions, 13 and are formed with the oppositely radially extend ed portions 13 terminating in the loops or eyes 13, which receive the wire bars or rods 4. It will be observed that there are duplicate wire members 13 at each end of the reel, onewire connecting diametrically opposed wire bars or rods 4: and the other member connecting the other diametrically opposed wire bars or rods 4. Thestructure shown in Fig. 4: is substantially like the structure shown in Fig. 3, except that the web menr bers are plates designated 14, having openings 14 through which the wire bars or rods 4 pass, and in the center of said plates 14: are openings 15, through which the spindle, not shown, is to be inserted.
' It is obvious from the foregoing, that various changes may be made without departing "from the spirit and scope of the invention, and 1, therefore, do not wish to be confined to either of the specific forms shown, except as claimed in the appended claims.
What 1 claim is 2-- 1. A wire reel including rectangular shaped end members, a plurality of horizontally disposed and parallel arranged rods connecting said end members, said rods having angular ends intersecting the corners of said end members at or adjacent the ends of said rods," and other members connecting said rods adjacent the bends forming said angular ends and forming webs and having openings to receive a spindle or the like.

A wire reel including rectangular shaped end members, a plurality of horizontally disposed and parallel arranged rods connecting said end members, said rods havravages ing angular ends intersecting the corners of said end members and lap welded thereto at or adjacent the ends of said rods, and other members connecting said. rods adjacent the bends forming said angular ends and forming webs and having openings to receive a spindle or the like.

A wire reel including rectangular shaped end members, a plurality of horizontally disposed and parallel arranged rods connecting said end members, said rods having angular ends intersecting the corners of said end members, and other members connecting said rods, each formed of twisted body portions having end loops to receive said rods and central openings to receive a spindle or the like.
