a. IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR FORMING ClGAR-WRAPPERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 200,889, dated March 5,1878; application filed September 19, 1877.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ORRIS A. BISHOP, of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Formers on which to Mold or Form Cigar-Wrappers, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had for illustration to theac companying drawings.

My invention consists in a former, or segments which constitute a former, of the construction hereinafter described,and surround- .ing a central core. To the central core is attached a handle, which forms a shoulder at thepoint of its attachment. The segments of the former abut against the shoulder thus formed.

.A loose ferrule or thimble slides over the ends iofthe segments at this point, and holds them in position around the central cores.v When in this position the segments constitute the form er, in the shape of a cigar. Paper or leaftobacco, or other desired material, may then be rolled, wound, or formed around the form er spirally or otherwise, the edges of such material lapping, and being pasted together, so as to keep the wrapper in shape when the former is withdrawn. This withdrawal is made simply by sliding the ferrule or thimble up the handle until the ends of the segments are released, when the core is easily withdrawn, leaving .the segments to collapse and be dropped out of the wrapper just formed. The wrapper canthen be filled withtobacco or other mate rial by placing the former in a mold prepared for the purpose, or otherwise.

In the drawings the same letters designate the same parts in the diflerent figures.

I Figure 1 is a side view of the former put together and ready for wrapping. V A is the handle to the core 0. (Seen more fully in Figs. 2, 5, and 6.) B is the sliding ferrule or thimble spoken of in the foregoing description.

Fig. 2 shows the central' core 0, around which are fitted the segments of the former. A is the handle B, the sliding ferrule or thimble; 0, the core proper and D are tongues on the surface of the core, one of which tongues fits into a corresponding longitudinal groove, F, in each of the segments E, Fig. 3, this being a perspective view of one of the segments E.

Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a segment, G. Fig. 5 gives a side view of the core 0. Fig. 6 gives an edge view of core 0. Fig. 7 is an inside face view of a segment, E. Fig. 8 is an edge view of a segment, G. Fig. 9 is an inside face view of a segment, G. Fig 10 is a wrapper or shell made on the former shown in Fig. 1.

I do not wish to limit myself to a particular number of the segments, or to the exact form of the parts composing the former, as the segments may be of any suitable number, and any of the parts may be changed somewhat in form to suit taste. v

What I claim as new and as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The improved former comprehending the core 0 and tongue D, the grooved sections or segments E, and the sections or segments G, as shown and described.

2. The sliding thimble B, jointly with the core and its handle, and the sections or segments E Gr, as shown and described.
