WING- DEVICE.
Specification of Letters "Eatent.
Patented June a, 1918.
Application filed February 6, 1,915, Serial 1N0.,:2,15,685.
Be it known that I, LAVINIA STEPHENS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Englewood, inqthe county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Winding Devices of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to winding devices, and more particularly to a device for winding balls of yarn and similar material.
One of the main objects of the invention is to provide a device of the character stated of simple construction and operation, by means of which the material to be wound may be A further object is to form a device by means of which the material may be so wound that, in the unwinding operation, the thread may be taken from the inside or center of the cot thus preventing rolling of the same such as occurs where the thread is taken from the outside. A further object is to provide a device in which the material is held securely in position while being wound and, after the cot is formed, it may be readily removed from the device. Furappear from the detailed description.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side view of a winding device constructed in accordance with my in vention,
Fig. 2 is an end View,
Fig. 3 is a transverse section,
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the device as used at the beginning of the winding operation,
Fig. 5 is a similar view showing the start of the cot being formed.
This winding device is provided with a cylindrical body 1, tapered at one end as at 2. At its other end, the body is reduced to provide a neck 3 at the upper end of which is formed an integral head 4:, this head being provided with a plurality of peripheral equally spaced teeth 5.
In using this device the thread 6 of yarn to be formed into a ball or cot is first wrapped about the reduced neck 3 several times, these wrappings being positioned within the groove 3*. The yarn is then wrapped upon the body portion 1 adjacent the neck 3, as at 6 During this winding operation, the thread is passed about the head 4 diametrically thereof between the teeth 5. This readily formed into balls or cots.
provides ;a plurality of loops 6 which extend from the body 1 about 311-116 head, these loops forming bridge members 6 which pass above the thread in groove 3. After the yarn has been passed about the head so as to provide bridge members referred to, the yarn may then be wrapped above these bridge members also, so that the end of the cot will extend approximately to the outer face of head 4:- During this wrapping operation, the yarn may be looped about the head in the manner previously described at various times, the object of this subsequent looping over the head being to form end retaining members which serve to prevent looseness and consequent slipping of the end portion of the cot. After the cot has been completed, it may be pulled from body 1 over the head 4. This is rendered possible by the provision of the bridge members 6 during the initial winding, these members serving to ing the body of the cot into grooves 3% When the cot which has been formed in the manner described is removed, the wrappings of thread about the neck 3 will serve to detachably secure the inner portion of the thread to the head, so that, by unwinding the wrappings, the inner end portion of the thread may be easily grasped. This renders it possible to unwind the thread from the center of the cot, thus avoiding the nuisance of having the ball or cot move or roll about when thread is being taken therefrom, such as occurs in cots formed in the ordinary manner in which the thread is taken from the outside of the cot.
What I claim is:
1. In a device of the character described, an elongated body of uniform thickness provided adjacent one end with an annular groove adapted to receive the end portions of a thread of material to be wound upon said body, the body being of smooth contour so as to permit ready removal of a ball or cot of material wound thereon.
2. In a device of the character described, an elongated body of uniform thickness provided at one end with a reduced neck and a head carried by said neck, the head and the end portion of the body adjacent thereto providing an annular groove contiguous to the end of the body adapted to receive the end portion of a thread of material to be wound upon the body, said body being of smooth contour throughout and the head beprevent entry of the twine formmam Copies of this patent may be obtained for five to form bridge members passing across the annular groove intermediate the inner face of said head and the ad acent end of the body.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
