Description

(MOdeL) W. P. FEET.
HAIR PIN,
Pat'ented Jan. 1, 1889.
ATTORNEYS.
WITNESSES NITED STATES PATENT rFIcE,
XVALTER F. FEET, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
HAIR-PIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 395,582, dated January 1, 1889.
Application filed May 26, 1888 Serial No. 275,213, (ModeL) To (LZZ whom it may concern:
o it known that I, 'YVAL'IER F. PEET, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have in vented a new and useful Improvement in Hair-Pins, which improvement is fully set forth in the followingspccification and accompanying drawin My invention consists of a hair-pin having coils in reversed directions, whereby it takes lirm hold of the hair and is prevented from accidental disengagement therefrom.
Figures 1 and 2 represent side elevations at a right angle to each other of a hair-pin embodying my invention.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a hair-pin, the limbs of which are coiled, as at a Z). The coils (1 extend in adirection the reverse of the coils l) and occupy different positions in the length of the limbs. The coils are preferably elongated, so as to reduce th e diameter of the limbs and obviate severe screw action of said coils. The port-ions c of the limbs between the coils a Z: are comparatively uncoiled, and form guides whereby the hair is directed from the coils a to the coils h:
It will be seen that the pin is pushed into the hair at its points, as usual, after which the i hair moves around the coils a and b, so that the movement is successively in opposite directions, and thus there is aholding action of the pin 011 the hair in reversed directions in the length of the limbs, due to the difference in the planes of the convolutions of the coils.
It is evident that the number of coils on each limb may be increased or diminished, and the pin, if desired, made of a single limb, with the peculiarity of a coil which for a portion of the length of said limb has its convolutions extending in one direction and another coil on the same limb having its convolutions extending in reversed direction thereon.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A hair-pin having a limb with coils, a portion of which has its convolutions in one direction and another portion on the same limb having its convolutions in the reversed direction, substantially as described.
2. A hair-pin having a limb with coils in reverse direction and a guiding portion between said coils, substantially as described.
\VALTER F. PEET.
