wi/wcooeo UNITED I STATES PATENT OFFICE.
STANLEY M. SOVOCOOL, OF ADDISON, NEW YORK.
CLOTHES-PIN.
Application filed October 25, 1913.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, STANLEY M. SovooooL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Addison, in the county of Steuben and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Pins, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improve ments in clothes pins and has for its object to provide a device of this general character produced from a single strand of wire.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and ar rangement of the several parts whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expen sive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claims.
In order that my invention may be the better understood I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a clothes pin constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a view in end elevation of the device as illustrated in Fig. 1, showing the relation of the parts; Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing the device but partly assembled; and Fig. 4 is a view similar to Figs. 1 and 3 showing the initial step in producing a clothes pin in accordance with the embodiment as herein contained.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes a strand of wire, of requisite gage and possessing a certain degree of resiliency, which is initially flexed or bent upon itself at substantially its center, as indicated at 2, to produce a bowed portion substantially semi-circular in form. At a predetermined point below the flexed or bowed portion 2, the strands are twisted, as at 3, one about the other with such twisted portion substantially central of the bowed or flexed portion 2, the adjacent portions of such strands being abruptly curved so that Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 8, 1914.
Serial No. 797,313.
the intermediate portions l will be substantially in parallel relation as will the remaining portions 5 thereof. It is to be observed that the fiexure 2 is so produced initially as to have one of the strands of greater length than the other so that the projected portion 6 thereof may be flexed in substantially a semi-circular manner and have its free extremity welded or otherwise permanently secured to the free extremity of the second strand.
The twisted portion 3 is flexed or bent in such a manner as to bring the smaller loop afforded by such twisted portion substantially parallel with the second or elongated loop and it is to be observed that such shorter loop is of such a length as to extend sufliciently along the greater loop as to effectually bridge a clothes line or the like to properly clamp an article thereto.
From the foregoing, it is thought to be obvious that a clothes pin constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be applied in operative position and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice.
Having thus fully described my invention what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A clothes pin produced from a single piece of wire bent intermediate its length to produce parallel strands, the free extremities of such strands being permanently united, such strands being twisted one about the other intermediate their lengths to afford two loops, said loops being bent so that said twisted portion is disposed at right angles to the loops to bring such loops into substantial parallel relation, such loops being normally spaced one from the other throughout their entire length.
2. A clothes pin produced from a single being normally spaced from said opposite piece of wire bent intermediate its length extremity of the pin throughout its length. 10 to produce parallel strands, said strands In testimony whereof Ihereunto affix my being twisted one about the other atv a point signature in the presence of two witnesses.
'-' intermediate their lengths to afford a loop, STANLEY M. SOVOCOOL.
said loop and the opposite extremity of the Witnesses: pin being bent so that said twisted portion FRANK S. WVHITMORE, is disposed at right angles thereto, said loop E. A. Sovoooon.
