EGG-PACKAGE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 393,564, dated November 2'7, 1888.

Application filed April 20, 1888. Serial No. 271,363.

.To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ARTHUR S. HOYT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hoboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Egg-Package,of which the following is a speciiication.

This invention relates to packages for handling and transporting eggs in quantities, and has for its object to provide a safe and handy egg-package adapted to be packed in quantities in crates without liability of the eggs breaking.

The invention consists in an egg-package constructed and arranged as hereinafter described and claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in'which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of an eggpackagc constructed in accordance with this invention, shown as open, with one end broken away. Fig. 2 is aperspective View of the removable frame detached, forming the egg cells or nests. Fig. 3 is a view of the blank forming the casing of the package, and Figs. 4-. and 5 are detached portions of the removable cell-frame.

In the construction of the invention the package consists of a casing, 1, formed from a blank of pasteboard or other suitable material, and a removable cell-frame, 2, consisting of longitudinal strips 3, interlocking with cross-strips 4, and forming therewith and with casing 1 a series of egg-cells. The cell'l'ramc 2 may be made of material similar to casing 1. The blank forming casing 1, made of any desired size, is cut so as to have the parts 5, constituting the front and back, with flaps 6, connected when in folded position by tongues 7 engaging slots 8 and constituting the ends, and the parts 9, constituting the top and bottom, having flaps 10, which, when folded, re enforce and strengthen the end. The top part, 9, also has a fiap, 11, which, when olded, overlaps the front 5, and is connected therewith by a tongue, 12, on the flap 11, engaging a slot, 13, in the front 5. The flaps 1.0 of the bottom are formed with lips 14, which when bent serve to support the ends of the horizontal longitudinal strips 3. The flaps 6 (No model.)

are cut of such a length that when folded and overlapped and connected by the tongues 7 and slots 8 they will be bowed.

To interlock the longitudinal strips 3 with the cross-strips 4 the former are provided on one edge with slots 15, extending about halfway across, and the latter with similar slots, 15, on each edge thereof. When the

The casingl being folded together, as shown in Fig. 1, and the frame I placed therein,the ends of the horizontal strips 3 will rest upon and be supported by the lips 14 of flaps 10, and the casing 1 will contain a series of egg-cells. The flaps 1.0 will form the walls for the end cells, and the overlapping flaps 6, by reason of their bowed form, will cause the ends of the casing 1 to be elastic, thereby protecting the contents of the package against end-pressure.

It is obvious that the size and capacity of the package may be varied by providing any number of cells desired.

I claim--- 1. In an eggpackage, a casing formed from a blank of pastcboard and constructed with top and bottom portions, 9, with vertical end flaps, 10, the bottom end flaps, 10, having horizontal lips 14, and front and back portions, 5, with overlapping end flaps, 6, connected by tonguts 7 and slots 8, the top portion, 9,having flap 11,with tongue 12,adaptcd to engage slot 13 in front portion, 5, substantially as shown and described.

2. In an egg-package, a removable cellframe, 2, consisting of vertical and horizontal strips 3, with slots 15, extending from one of theirlongitudinal edges and extending part way across the strip, and strips 4, transverse to the strips 3, with similar slots, 15, extending from their edges, the strips 8 and at interlocking with each other and forming a series of egg-cells, substantially as shown and described.
