Description

Patented June 9, 1925.
UNI-*ren sT-Arias aaneen antemano; or encantan, new geen.
`Application .'led'October 6,:1'920 Serial No. 415,068.
'To all Juf/mm 'it may concern: Y n
' Be it known that ,'LGnoncn HOLLAND, a citizen o'f'theUnited lStates, anda resident .of -the borough of Brooklyn, city of New i York, county of 1li-ings, yand State of `New York, have invented an Improvement vin Hosiery Boxes, yof which ,the following is a specification.
This invention relates to boxes or con ll taincrs for hosiery, and more particularly to moans whereby hosiery is held in such boxes in a predetermined position.
One of the objects thereof is to provide simple and practical means for holding 15 hosiery, and more particularly half-hose, in proper position in the box or container in which it is packed. Another object is to provide means of the above type which although of simple and inexpensive construction, will dependably interlock at its edges with the hosiery. Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter. The invention accordingly consists in the r features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the structure hereinafter described and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawing, in which is shown one of various possible embodiments of this invention,
.Figure 1 is a plan view of a box showing the hosiery in position therein; c
Figure 2 is a similar view of the box ready to receive the hosiery;
Figure 3 is a sectional elevation along the line 3 3 of Figure 2;
Figure l is a cross-section taken along the line i-Jlof Figure 2; and
Figure 5 is a similar view taken along the line 5 5 of Figure 2. Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views of the drawing.
Referring now to Figure 2 of the drawing, there is shown at an ordinary box of cardboard or the like, having sidewalls 11 and end walls 12. This box is provided adjacent one end with a pair of flaps 13 angularly disposed with respect one to another and cut free from the substance of the box, r .at the sides and one end of the flap. The fiap is bent upwardly using its uncut edge as a hinge, into the upright position shown 'in the drawing. These y`flaps 13 are :substanftially identical and are so Jrelat'efll as -to lit within the folded lends' ofthe Asuperposed vhosiery Mas indicatedat 15 i-n 'Figure l of the drawing. "The edges -of i'these flaps fare preferably serrated as shown at ilto lpermit them to bite into the hosiery andffmore -sevcure'ly "hold i't against `relativeslippilng.
Adjacent the opposite end of the box are two flaps 17 similar to the flaps 13 and similarly cut from the bottom of the box on three sides and bent upwardly therefrom, using the uncut side as a hinge. Also, the edges of these flaps are serrated as shown at 18, The flaps 17 are inclined with respect one to another as shown in the drawing, instead of extending parallel or lengthwise of the box and thus tend more securely to bite into the upper portion of the hosiery and prevent its lsglipping away from the adjacent end of the The bottom of the box, and 'if preferred other portions thereof, are covered with paper as indicated at 19 and as the flaps 13 and 17 are cut from the bottom of the box before this paper 19 is placed in position, the latter is uncut and extends over the openings left by the several flaps. In this manner the box is complete and the hosiery is protected even at these openings.
In the manufacture of the box, the flaps 13 and 17 may be cut from the bottom by a suitable die and may be bent readily upward into the position shown to receive the hosiery. The lat-ter is placed in position and being gripped by and interlocked with the several flaps, is snugly held in the desired form. lThe entire device is simple and is free from the necessity for added parts as in the case in which separable forms are inserted in a box. Furthermore it is readily manufactured and is well adapted to -ineet the conditions of hard practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
I claim as my invention 1. In a device of the character described, in combination, a box for enclosing hosiery having cut out and bent up fromits bottom member two pairs of flaps, one pair of which is adapted. to embrace therebetween an llfl upper' portion of hosiery positioned `in the box and the other pair of which are positioned at an angle one with another and adapted to engage and support the lower ends of said hosiery, the said box comprising a paper member upon its bottom covering the openings left by said flaps.
2. A device of the character described, comprising a box having formed in its bottom adjacent one end a pair of integral liaps adapted `to engage the sides of hosiery positioned therebetween and having adjacent the opposite end a pair of relatively inclined flaps adapted to engage the end of said hosiery and tend to prevent its lateral displacement.
3. A device of the character described comprising a box having two pairs or" flaps positioned to embrace therebetween pairs of y hosiery positioned therein, and the aps of the other pair being positioned to engage and support the opposite end of said hosiery, and a continuous ,member secured to the lower surface of the bettom or" said box and covering the openings corresponding to said liaps, the edges of said flaps being serrated to interlock with the edges of said hosiery.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specilication this 4th day of October, 1920.
