will be on view for display, and may be encased in a transparent wrapper for keeping the contents of'the carton clean,
fresh and sanitary.
The invention contemplates the provision of a carton havin 'anelongated bottom terminating in end aps, andfurther having relatively low side flaps terminating at each end in enlarged flap members each provided with slots and designed to interlock with the adjacent slotted end flapmember to hold the side walls and the the cartonin upright position. When the carton is thus assembled articles for sale may be arranged therein, and the whole wrapped and sealed in a transparent coverin The invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, with the understanding that the invention is not confined to any strict conformity with the showing of the.
drawings but may be changed and modified so long as such changes and modifications mark no material departure from the salient features of the invention as expressed 'in the appended claim.
In the drawings 2- Figure 1 showsiri perspective the article embodying this invention, the same being shown having one end filled and encased in a wrapper and the other end being empty and having the walls thereof disengaged showing the manner of folding.
Figure 2 shows an end elevation of the carton.
Figure 3 is a plan view of the pattern.
Referring now to the drawings indetail wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the invention comprises the provision of a carton having a relatively long bottom portion 1, having markings 2 extending transversely at. each end' thereof, and the porfirst mentioned flaps of' folded position,
tions lying beyond the marking shown, when folded upwardly, constitute-end wall flaps 3.
Extending longitudinally of the body 1, are spacedparallel marks 4separating the body from the outer sidewall flap portions v5 which are formed when these portions are bent upwardly upon the markings 4. These outer side wall portions extend. the full length of the body and end wall flaps 3 and have formed transversely thereof adjacent each end and in alignment with. the markings 2, the transverse markings 6,'an d when the portions lying beyond these markings 6 are bent inwardly, after the portions have been severed at their inneredges from the sides of the end wall I cated at 7 there are formed locking tabs 8,
, 9, 10'and11 respectively.
The side wall flap portions 5 are cut inwardly at an angle as indicated at 12 and then cut longitudinally as is shown to set up the outer edge 13, thus forming the side walls 5 of less height than the end walls 3 and the locking tabs. p
The locking tabs 9 and 11 which are at opposite corners as shown, are each cut transversely for substantially half its width from the central portion of the inner edge as indicated at 14 and each is further cut longitudinally at right angles vto the, edge 14 and intermediate the ends' thereof as indicated at 15, the inner end of the edge 15 being rounded as at 16 and running parallel with the inner edge 14 thus setting up the slot 17 Each of the other locking tabs 8 and 10 has a transverse slot 18 formed therein and extending from the outer edge inwardlyto approximately the central part of the tab and in alignment with the slot 17 formed in the opposite tab.
As is clearly shown in Figures 1 and 2 the end wall flaps 3, when the carton is in are of greater height than the locking tabs and the side walls 5,
When thecarton is folded, the end walls 3 are first bent upwardly along the lines 2 and after folding the locking tabs along the line 6, the side walls 5 are folded inward-- ly thus causing the locking'tabs to overlap upon tabs Sand 9 upon one end. and the tabs 10 and 11 upon the otherend are crossed in such a manner so as to bring the slots 17 and 18 into alignment whereupon the body of one tab is forced into the slot flap portions 3 as ind1- the outer face of the end walls 3. The
of the adjacent tab locking the two together across the end wall as clearly shown in Figure 2.,
The tabs are so locked together that the end of the tab 9 upon one end of the carton and the end of the tab 11 upon the other end of the carton is each arranged behind the coacting tab, ,as shown in Figure 2,
thus forming the carton without exposed edges.
This carton is primarily intended for the packaging of doughnuts, although it is tobe understood that it is not to be limited to such use, but may be used wherever applicable, and after the required number of doughnuts have been placed on edge in the carton as indicated in dotted lines by the numeral 19 in Figure 1, a wrapper 21 of transparent or waxed paper is then placed about the entire package and is sealed, and owing to the rounded condition of the corners oi the end walls 3 as indicated at 20,
no projections are formed which would cause the wrapper 21 to become broken and the contents ofthe carton are thus retained in clean, fresh and sanitary condition, always onview but protected from contact with unclean, objects. a
It will be apparent that the end wall flaps '3 when the carton is set up will serve as props for the wrapper, and sustain the latter from sagging, as well as taut throughreoaeee 'out that portion above the goods within the carton. The transparency of the wrapper permits the goods to be visible within the carton, and such wrapper is capable of be ing supplied with any form of advertising matter externally on the same.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that there has been provided a container for the purpose set forth which is of unique and novel design, and in which the articles forsale may be kept on view and atthe same time be kept wrapped and clean.
Having thus described my invention what 1' claim is A package of the character described, co1n-,
prising a carton having a fiat substantially rectangular shaped bottom, foldable side and end walls, each end wall being in two sections detachably engageably'with each ture hereto.
