PATEN ALICE JOHNSTONE, OF AVQNDALE, NEXV JERSEY.
COMBINED BRACELET AND BUTTON=HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 393,239, dated November 20. 1888.
- Application filed July 1'7, 1888. Serial No. 280,933. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALICE JoHNsToNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Avondale, county of Essex, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Bracelet and Button-Hook, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates to a combined bracelet and button-hook, and has for its object to provide an article of manufacture which shall not only have the ornamental features of a brace let, but shall also have the utility of a buttonhookyand my invention consists in an article of manufacture constructed substantially as hereinafter indicated, whereby it is adapted for the purposes above set forth.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated two embodiments of my invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a bracelet with the button-hook attachment open ready for use. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same embodiment with the hook closed to complete the bracelet. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of a modified form, showing the hook open; and Fig. 4 is a similarview showing the hook closed to complete the bracelet.
It is within the experience of most every one who has occasion to use a button-hook that when its services are most needed it is not at hand, as being a separate and distinct article it is liable to be mislaid or lost, and heretofore attempts have been made to combine a button-hook with other articles that are usually at hand, so that its liability to misplacement or loss is lessened. One of the objects of my invention is to overcome this difficulty and to connect the button-hook with another article of manufacture that is not as liable to be misplaced or forgotten, and which at the same time shall cooperate therewith and form part thereof, so as to cheapen the cost of the combined article and form a useful and ornamental device.
To this end my invention, broadly considered, consists in combining with a bracelet or other similar ornamental articlea button-hook so formed and arranged as to constitute a portion of the bracelet.
In the accompanying drawings, A repre sents the body portion of a bracelet, which may be of any desired form or configuration,
and which may be ornamented, as at B, and such ornamentation may constitute part of the securing means. In this instance the ornamentation is placed on the bent end a of the body portion A and forms a catch thereon. Connected to the other end of the body por tion A is the button-hook C, it being shown as pivoted to the body portion at a and the other end as being provided with a hook, c. When the hook is turned outward, as shown in Fig. 1, it is in a position to be easily and effectively used as an ordinary glove-buttoner or other similar purpose; but when it is in the position shown in Fig. 2 the hook c embraces the bent end or catch a and forms a secure fastening for the bracelet. It will be seen that this arrangement of button-hook does not in any way interfere with the aesthetic eii'ect of the bracelet or detract from its use as an ornamentation, while at the same time it cooperates with the bracelet and forms a material part thereof and assists in securing it in position.
In Fig. 3 I have shown another embodiment of my invention, in which the body portionA is composed of two rods or bands, 1 2, secured together at intervals, as at 3 3, by braces, which may be of any desired ornamentation, and upon one end is mounted an ornamental figure or projection, 4, and a short distance therefrom a similar projection is mounted, which serve not only as ornaments for the bracelet, but as a portion of the securing device. Connected to the other end of the body portion, as at 6, is a button-hook, C, which in this instance is shown in loop form, and which, when extended, as shown in Fig. 3, can be used for a button-hook or a similar purpose, and when in the position shown in Fig. 4 it is passed over the ornamental figures or projections 4. 5 and operates therewith to form a secure locking device for the bracelet.
It will thus be seen that not only does the button-hook serve its usual function, but that it is combined with the bracelet in such away as to form a portion thereof; and it will also be seen that it can be made to conform to the general style of ornamentation of the bracelet, and not only constitute a mechanical portion of the bracelet, but conduce to the aesthetic appearance thereof.
From the above description it will be seen that my invention is not limited to the precise forms and arrangements herein shown, as it is evident to those skilled in the art that they may be varied in form, constrnctiomand ornamentation without departing from the principles thereof.
What I claim is 1. A combined bracelet and button -hook consisting of a bracelet a material portion of the body whereof constitutes the hook, substantially as described.
2. A bracelet a portion of the body whereof is formed into a button-hook and joined to the remaining portion, substantially as described.
A combined bracelet and button-hook, the hook being pivoted to one end of thebod y of the bracelet, and serving in connection with
