following to beat full, clear, and exact description of the invcntion,snch as will enable others 7 skilled in the art to which it appertaius to-make and use the same.
This Invention has. relation to devices for securing a. trap or cover on the ends of barrels,
and is designed to be used on the heads of baring in the head of a barrel.
rel-churns.
The invention will be fully understood from the following description and claims, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which;
Figure 1 is aplam view of my improved device,showing the parts in a locked position, and Fig.- 2 is a sectional view of the same taken on the line a: x of Fig. 1, showing the same in connection with a portion of abarrel.
Referring by letter to the said drawings, A indicates a'portion of a barrel, which may be that of the barrel used in churns.
B indicates an annular top seated at its outer edge or margin in the croze of a barrel, and provided with a central annular aperture, a, which is preferably formed at its mouth with an annular lip, b. This head B is designed to be fixed in the erozc of abarrel.
Arranged at diametrically-opposite points of the opening a and'on the outer side of the head .13 are loops o'rstaples C, which are designed to receive a lock-bar, as will be presently explained;
I) indicates a rotatable cover for the open- This cover is preferably provided on its under side with a marginal annular groove to receive the lip or flange b of the head B. This cover D is furthermore provided on its upper side with a series of lugs which incline to opposite ends from their center. In the present illustrationI have shown four of these lugs, E, they being arranged diametrically opposite each I other in paiis,fo r'a purpose whichwlll be presvutly explained. v F indicates a hand-lever. This lever is secured to the-upper side of the rotatable cover D and extends beyond the same at opposite ends, so that it may be grasped at eitherend. This hand-lever is secured to the cover flush with the lowest point of the inclined lugs or slightly beneath the same, soas to oflcr no ob-- struction to the action of the lock-bar.
G indicates a securing-bar. This bar is designed to enter the loops 0, and is preferably provided at one end with a stud or lug, d. Secured to the under side of this securingbar and arranged at right angles thereto is a lock-bar, H, it being fixed to the securing-bar G'and designed to move therewith.
I indicates a thumb-screw, which passes through an aperture in both the securing-bar G and the lock-bar H, and may enter the hand-lever F, which is secured to the rotatable cover.
In operation the cover D is placed over the aperture in the head B and the said cover turned so as to have the ends of one pair of the inclined lugs come to the openings of the loops Oli'BtfiPlCS G. The securing-bar G is then placed in the said loops above the cover, so as .to have its lock-bar H lie parallel to and above the hand-lever F. The screw I is then applied, so as to prevent the securingbar and lock-bar from leaving their positions. Then by simply rotating the cover to the right by means of the hand-lcver F the lugs will exert an upward pressure against the lockbar H and by the securing-bar G against the loop 0, and consequently an inward or downward pressure of the cover against the head, thereby effecting a tight joint at the opening therein.
-It will be observed that while one set of lugs E are pressing against the lock-bar H a corrtsponding set is acting in a similar manner against the securing-bar G. Havi ng described my invention,what I claim 15- w z 1. The'combinatiomwith a barrel having the head fixed, in the croze thereof and provided with a central-opening, of the loops secured ICO ' passing through both bars'nnd into the cover to the securingbar at right angles thereiwiubor handle thereof, substantially as specified. stantlally as specified. 2.'The combination,with a barrel having the head'secnred in the croze thereof and provided 5 with an opel'iing, of the loops secured to the said head, a covering for the opening having inclined lngs on its enter side a securing-bar adnpted to enter the l0ops,and alock-bar fixed presence of two witnesses.
