UNITED STATES ATENT FICE' EDVIN HAOKLANDER, OF WELCOME, MINNESOTA.
CALF-WEANER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 393,068, dated November 20, 1888.
Application filed July 25, 1888. Serial No. 280,996. No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN HACKLANDER,H. citizen of the United States, residing at Welcome,in the county of Martin and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oalf-Veaners, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in calf-weaners; and it consists in the constructionand novel combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device attached to the head of a calf. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the sam detached.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates a band of some stiff material, preferably metal, the ends of which are connected by the series of adjusting-openings a near one end, the single adjusting-opening a in the other end, and the loop of wire a'flwhich may be passed through the single opening and any one opening of the series, so as to convert the band into a ring of greater or less diameter for attachment around the lower part of the head or nose of a larger or smaller calf.
B B are ears standing upward from nearly opposite points of the band so formed, and G G are straps having their lower ends connected by rivets or otherwise to the ends of said ears, whencethe strap 0 is passed up and over the top of the head of the calf, behind the horns and ears, and then brought down and connected to the upper end of the shorter strap, G, by a buckle, as shown.
D D are long spikes standing about radially outward from the front portion of the ring A, and d d are smaller and shorter spikes standing radially inward from said front portion.
E is a wire yoke having its ends hooked in openings in the ears B and provided centrally with the integral coiled spring e, which lies on the front of the face of the calf, above the nose, and by drawing the ring A outward prevents the spikes d from sticking into the nose of the calf, the ring A being always arranged to be sufficiently larger in diameter than the nose to which it is attached to prevent said action of the spikes.
WVhen the calfattempts to suck, not only the spikes D prick the cow, but the front of the ring A is moved inward and the spikes d prick the calfs nose, the spring a and yoke Egiving sufficiently to permit this and returning the front of the ring A to its normal position when the calf desists.
Having described my invention, I claim 1. A calf-weaner comprising an adjustable band-ring provided with ears to receive the sccuringstraps, radial inwardly and outwardly projecting spikes secured to said ring, and a spring-yoke secured to the ears thereof, as and for the purpose set forth.
'2. In a calf-weaner, the combination, with a band-ring to surround the nose of the calf and provided with opposite upstanding ears, the straps O O, buckled together and hlding the band-ring in place, and the spikes d,standing inward from the front part of the bandring, of the yoke having its ends hooked in openings in the ears of the band-ring, and the central integral coiled spring on said yoke,by means of which yoke and spring the front of the band-ring, which is of greater diameter than the surrounded nose, is forced outward, and the spikes d are prevented from pricking the calf, substantially as specified.
3. The herein-described calf-weaner, com prising the band-ring A, rendered adjustable in diameter by the openings a a and wire loop a, and having the opposite ears B, the spikes D,outstanding from the front ofthe band-ring, the spikes I), standing inward from the front of the band-ring, the straps C G, for holding the band-ring in position, and the yoke E,having the integral coiled spring at its center, sub stantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWIN HAOKLANDER. \Vitnesses:
