THOMAS E. STONE AND CLARENCE 0. SMITH, OF CAMPTOW'N, PENNSYLVANIA.
BUCKLE AND SNAP-HOOK COMBINED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 490,047, dated January 17, 1893.
Application filed \T 11112 21 1892. Serial No. 437,484 (No model.)
To Ml whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, THOMAS E. STONE and CLARENCE 0. SMITH, citizens of the United States, residing at Camptown, in the county of Bradford, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harness Attachmentaof which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in harness attachments, embodying a combined snap and buckle or catch, and it has for its object to provide an improved device of this character which shall be simple and cheap and which will hold the end of the strap in such a way that it will not gall or injure the animal. The portion of the body of the device that lies between the snap and the buckle or catchis recessed upon its under side to provide for the reception of the end of the strap, so that the end will be confined within the area of the said portion. This body portion has, upon its upper face, a lug or car which is designed to bear upon the upper face of the strap near the end and keep the same within the said recess and prevent its raising up sufficiently to prevent its disengagement.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined by the appended claim.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved device with astrap held therein. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof with a portion broken away and part in section.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the main portion of the device which terminates at one end in a little more than semi circular portion a which, at its end upon the inner face is formed with a recess a for the reception of the end of the spring tongue B which is secured at its other end in any suit-able manner to the body portion as seen in Fig. l, and the free end of this tongue is designed to fit in the recess in the hook portion and form a continuous smooth surface upon the inner face of the hook to prevent the accidental catching of the strap against the end of the tongue and opening the same and allowing the strap to pass out. The body portion is formed with a cross bar I) which carries a pin 1) to engage a hole in the strap 0 and upon each side of this cross bar is a loop through which the strap passes. The under side of the body portion between the cross bar and the end of the tongue is recessed upon inclined or curved lines as seen in Fig. 2 into which the end of the strap is designed to rest as seen in Fig. 2 so that the end will not project/below the lower face of the main portion to gall the horse. The contour of the main portion of the device may vary; it may be of the shape shown in full lines in Fig. 1, or that in dotted lines.
In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2 we have shown the body portion as formed upon its upper face with a lug e which extends nearly to the central cross bar and which is designed to bear upon the upper face of the strap and hold the end down in its recess as will be understood from Figs. 1 and 2.
The novelty in the present invention resides in forming the main or body portion of the device with a longitudinally curved transverse double loop with the cross bar depressed or on a line somewhat below the upper face of the curved plane of said main part whereby the strap is thrown out of a horizontal plane and has a bearing upon the under side of the end cross bar of the one loop and in a higher plane upon the under side of the lug e as will be readily understood from Fig. 2 and the recess formed beneath said lug and the adjacent portion permits-of upward movement of that end of the strap when strain is placed upon the device.
That is claimed as new is;
As an improved article of manufacture the herein described combined snap hook and buckle the same consisting of the main portion terminating at one end in a hook and at the other end inan elongated downwardlycurved transverse double loop with integral I and adapted to co-operate with the latter, sub- 10 central depressed cross bar with pin and with stantially as specified.
