Description

END GATE POR w AAAAAAA No. 393,016. P 8888888888888888888 UNrrnn STATES ATENT trice.
SAYRES N. LENN ON, OF HURON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF 'IO ADDISON H. VINOHELL, OF SAME PLACE.
END-GATE FOR wAeoNs.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 393,016, dated November 20, 1888.
Application tiled June 5, 1888. Serial No. 276,111. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, SAYRns N LENNoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Huron, in the county of Erie and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in End- Gates for Vehicle-Bodies, of which the following is a-specification. l
My invention relates to improvements in end-gates for vehicle-bodies, having for its object to provide simple and strong means for connecting the same to the sides of the wagon and for locking it in its closed position; and it consists in a certain novel construction and combination of devices, fully set forth hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figurel is a perspective View of an endgate embodying my improvements and applied to a vehicle-body. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through one end of the gate and the adjacent side, to show the construction and arrangement of the parts. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 4 is a detail View of the headed stud. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the casting or socket-plate.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the end-gate, which is mounted between the sideboards B, and bears at its lower edge on the bottom board, B'. A longitudinally-slotted plate, O, is arranged on the bottom board under the center of the end-gate, and on a suitable wear-plate, D, which is affixed to the end- .gate near its lower edge, is mounted the camplate E, having a handle, e. This cam is adapted to be engaged in the slot in the plate C when the end-gate is in its closed position.
F F represent castings or socket-plates, which are affixed to the upper corners of the endgate over recesses formed therein, and are provided with ears f f, which are secured, respectively, on opposite sides of the end-gate. These castings or socket-plates form, in connection with the recesses, the sockets G G, and H designates vertical slots, which are formed in the ends of the castings and communicate with the said sockets, and the lower ends of the slots form bearings for the studs I, which are arranged in the side-boards of the vehicle.
K represents a vertical strap, which is secured to the outer side of the side-board, and
is provided near its upper end with a squared aperture, la, and L designates a socket, which is affixed to or formed integral with the inner side of the said strap, and is provided with a square bore, Z, registering with an aperture, 7c, and tapered toward its outer end. The stud is provided with a tapered shank, M, which is square in section, and is tted in the bore of the socket, and is threaded at its outer end to receive a nut, m. The inner ends of the studs are provided with the laterally-ex tending heads N, which operate in the sockets G on either side of the slots H, and when the end-gate reachesits closed position these heads bear against the shoulders O O, which are formed in the sockets. The object of the said shoulders is to prevent the heads of the studs from passing ont of the sockets as the endgate approaches its vertical position, and before the lower edge of the gate bears on the bottom of the body. Vhen the end-gate is turned`with its lower edge up, the gate may be raised vertically, and the heads on the ends of the studs will pass freely out of engagement with the socket-s G, and to prevent the head from passing out of the socket while the gate is in an intermediate position, or before it has reached its raised position, the free ends of the heads of the studs are provided with lips P, (parallel with the shanks of the studs,) which engage inwardly-extending anges Q, at the lower ends of the slots H. Thus the endgate may be freelyswung on its pivoting-studs Without danger of being accidentally detached, and when it is desired to removeit it is readily and quickly accomplished in the manner above described.
Having thus described the invention, I claiml. The end-gate having sockets at its upper corners, and a cam pivoted to the same near its lower edge, in combination with the studs arranged on the sides of the vehicle and engaging the sockets, and the slotted plate on the bottom of the vehicle adapted to be engaged by the said cam, substantially as speciied. 2. In an end-gate, the castings or socketplates afxed thereto and having sockets therevin, and vertical slots communicating with the sockets, in combination with the studs affixed ICO to the vehicle and provided with heads eni gaging the said Sockets, Substanti-allyas speci fied. 4
3. In an end-gate, the castings or socketplates affixed thereto and having vertical slots 'in their outer ends communicating with the sockets, and the Shoulders O in the sockets, in combination with the studs on the vehiclebody having laterally-extending heads operating in the sockets and adapted to engage the said Shoulder therein, Substantially as specified.
4. In au end-gate, the castings or Socketplates affixed thereto and having the vertical slots H, the shoulders O1 and inwardly-extending flanges Q, in combination with the stationary Studs having lateral heads provided with lips at their extremities, substantial] y as specified.
5. In an end-gate, the castings or socketplates affixed thereto, in combination with the studs having heads to engage the Sockets, and provided with Squared Shanks mounted in squared sockets in the side-boards, substantially as specied.
6. In an end-gate, the castings or socketplates aflxed thereto, in combination with the bore, the studs adapted to engage the sockets and provided with squared or angular Shanks -itting in the bores of the said sockets, and the nuts engaging the outer ends of the Shanks, substantially as specitied.
7. In an end-gate, the castings or socketplates affixed thereto, in combination with the sockets L, arranged in the sides of a vehiclebody and having squared or angular bores tapered toward their outer ends, the headed studs engagingthe sockets in the castings or soeketplates, and provided with squared or angular Shanks tapered toward their outer ends and fitting in the bores ofthe sockets L, and the nuts engaging the outer ends of the Shanks, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed mysignature in presence ef two Witnesses.
