Description
UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
ROYAL L. MUNGER, OF BROCTON, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO THOS. R. OAPWVELL, ()F SAME PLACE. L
RUNNING-GEAR SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters FOR VEHICLES.
Patent No. 427,351, dated May 6, 1890.
Application filed March 3, 1890. Serial No. 342,364. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROYAL L. MUNGER, of Brocton, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gearing for Vehicles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in gearing for vehicles; and it consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be fully described hereinafter, and pointed out in the claim.
The object of my invention is to produce a running-gear for vehicles, by means of which both pairs of wheels are made to turn at the same time, to connect the ends of the crossed reaches to the axles by means of plates which are secured to the axle, and to connect the body to the running-gear by means of braces which steady the body and prevent any swaying movement.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a vehicle to which my invention is' applied, the rear wheels being removed. Fig. 2 is an inverted View of the same.
A represents the wheels, and B the metallic axles. Applied to the tops and bottoms of the two axles are the two plates 0, between which the ends of the two crossed metallic reaches D are pivoted, and which reaches serve to cause both axles to turn at the same time, and thus enable the vehicle to turn in a much smaller space than can be done where it is constructed in the usual manner. Upon the top of the upper plate C are placed the blocks F, and upon the tops of these blocks F are placed the elliptical springs G. Applied to the bottom portion of each spring is a plate H, and passing down through the plates II and O are the bolts I, which serve to secure the plates, springs, and the blocks rigidly in position upon the top of the axle. By means of this construction a considerable saving is effected bothin the construction and in the time required to secure the parts together.
Placed upon the top of each spring G is a -wooden block J, and upon the tops of these blocks the bolsters L are rigidly secured by means of the bolts O,Wl1l0l1 pass through 5 5 plates 1?, placed inside of the upper portions of the springs. Placed upon the top of each of the bolsters L is a flat disk Q, and secured to the under side of the Wagon-body R are the cleats S, and on the under side of each -cleat is secured a disk T, which corresponds to the ones Q. Passing down through the body R, the cleats S, the disks Q T, the bolsters L, and the braces U are the bolts V, which serve to uniteall of these parts. These braces U extend under the bolsters L, and have their two ends secured to the under side of the body R and serve to steady the body and to prevent any swaying movement. The pivotal bolt V, which passes through the plates '70 T Q and the bolsters L, has its lower end to extend below said bolsters and throughthe braces U, which rest against the under side of the bolsters at this point. To the front axle is secured a tongue in the usual manner.-
A wagon, as here shown and described, is especially adapted for vineyards and other such places,is easily managed and not likely to get out of order and is cheap and simple in construction.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- The combination of the springs, the blocks J, mounted thereon, the bolster L, the bolts 0, the plates placed inside of the springs, disks 85 T Q, the body R, the bolts V, which pass down through the parts, and the braces U, which connect the body to the runi'ling-gear, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in c presence of two witnesses.
ROYAL L. -MUNGER.
Witnesses:
THOMAS CAPWELL, LoUIs D. SULLIVAN.
