PORTABLE SAFE.
N0. 391,921. Patented 0G13. 30, 1888.
WITNESSE V M @QZOZQ y UNITED STATES PATENT OrricEo JOSEPH J. SCHUKNECHT, OF BTLFY, OHIO.
PORTABLE SAF.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 391,921, dated October SO, 1888.
Application filed January 3|,1SSS- `Serial No. 262,501. (Xo model.)
To @ZZ whom, t may concern.-
Be it known that I, J osErH J. SoHUKNEcnT, of Bailey, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful lmproveznent in Portable Safes, of which the following is a full, clear, aud exact description.
The object of my invent-ion is to provide a portable safe for the storage of important papers, jewelry, and other `articles of value, which will afford secure protection against tire and can be easily and cheaply manufactured.
The invention consists of certain novel features ofconstruction and combinations of parts, hereinafter fully described, and distinr tly pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the gures.
Figure l is a transverse sectional elevation on the line x x, Fig. 2, of a safe embodying my improvement, and Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional elevation of the same on the line y y, Fig. l.
The body A of the safe is constructed of metal or kindred material, and is provided with a lid, B, hinged or otherwise separably connected to the box and provided with a suitable lock, C.
In the body A is placed centrally a box, D, considerably smaller than and separated on all sides from lhesame, a reprooilling, E, of plaster-ol'-paris or a similar substance being packed tightly around and beneath the box E, so as to hold it in its position isolated from the interior of the body, and thus secure any papers or other articles contained in the box against possible destruction by fire. The top ol" the iilling E coincides with the upper edge ofthe box D, which is somewhat below that of the body A, and the box is enlarged near the top, forming a step, F, extending entirely around the same. A tray, G, also filled with plaster-of-paris, is adapted to rest upon the step F, and thus serve as a lire-prooi lid for the box D.
A removable cover, Il, is adapted to rest upon the top of the hardened iilling E around the tray G and box D, and is secured firmly in place by a wire, J, embedded in the iilling E, passing underneath the box and having its ripper projecting extremities fastened to opposite sides of the cover. rlhe space between the lid B and cover H makes a convenient storage-place for jewelry and trinkets.
In theinterior ofthe main lid B, I prefer to arrange an alarm, K, which is adapted to be sounded when the projections Q on the handles Q are brought in contact in the act of lift-ing the safe, with the projecting ends ofthe spring-rod M, secured to the tripperL of the alarm. The alarm can, however, be dispensed with, as it forms no part of the present invention.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a safe, the combination of a hollow body having a lid, a box, a fireproof filling in the body embedding the box, a cover for said box, and a wire passing around the box through the filling and fastened to opposite sides ofthe cover, substantially as described.
2. ln a safe, the combination of a hollow body having a lid, a box enlarged to i'orin a step near its top held inthe body, a fire-proof filling isolating the box from the body, a tray adapted to rest on the step and cover the box, an outer cover for the tray, and means for fastening said cover in place, substantially as described.
JOSEPH J. SGHUKNECHT.
