INVENTOR ATTORNEY ANDREW ABRAHAM.FHOTO-LITNQWASMNGTOK D C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT C. DAVIS, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
PORTABLE SAFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 552,517, dated January '7', 1896.
Application filed August 26, 1895- Serial No. 560,468. (No modell) To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, ROBERT C. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Safes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the improvement of fireproof safes or deposit-cases, and the objects of my invention are to provide a portable safe of this class of superior construction and arrangement of parts, to so construct said safe as to prevent the destruction by fire of papers or other articles contained therein, and to produce other improvements the details of construction of which will be more fully pointed out hereinafter. These objects I accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved safe. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view with the external lid thrown open, and Fig. 4 is a transverse section on line a; a: of Fig. 1.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In the construction of my improved safe I provide an external casing a of suitable sheet metal. This casing may be of a square, rectangular or circular form, as may be desired. To the upper side of the casing a I hinge a suitable metallic lid 1). lVithin the central portion of the casing a I provide a smaller metallic receptacle or case 0, the space beneath said case 0 and about the sides thereof being filled with loose asbestos c. The inner surface of the metallic inner case 0 is provided with a lining of suitable thickness of asbestos board 0 As indicated at d, I surround the upper end of the case 0 with a layer or gasket of asbestos board, the latter forming a cover for the loose asbestos 0. Above this gasket 01 and above the case 0 I fit within the casing a a horizontal metallic plate 6, which, as indicated in the drawings, is provided on its under side with a layer of asbestos c of suitable thickness. Above the plate (2 I provide a cap f, which fits within the easing CL, and the vertical sides of which rest upon the outer portions of the plate c. This cap fis provided with a filling of asbestos, which is indicated at f.
Upon the cap f bears a circular metallic plate g, the latter being preferably provided with an upwardlyprojecting handle-piece g.
On the under side of the casing a I provide a metallic plate g which preferably oorresponds in form with the plate 9. h represents vertical bolts, which, extending through the plate 9 and bottom of the case a, pass upward between the casings c and a, through the asbestos c, thence through the plates (1 6, cap f, and top plate g. The upper screwthreaded ends of these rods h, of which there may be any desired number, are adapted to receive thumb-nuts k, and by turning downward said thumb-nuts it is evident that the internal parts of my improved safe may be drawn closely together and that the inner compartment 0 will not only be made airtight but will be surrounded 011 all sides by a thick wall of substantially fireproof material.
It is obvious that the inner casing or compartment c is designed to receive papers, money or other valuables which are to be protected from fire, after which the plates (:1 e, cap f, and plate 9 may be secured, in the position described, over said inner compartment, and the hinged lid 1) may then be closed down over the upper end of the case a.
From the construction herein shown and described it will be seen that a portable safe or deposit-box is formed which will serve as a fireproof-receptacle for valuable papers, money or other articles, and it will also be seen that the construction of my device is such as to admit of its being produced, at a reasonable cost of manufacture, in a neat,
light and compact form.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-=- 1. In a portable safe the combination with a metallic casing and a suitable lid therefor, of an internal metallic casing c, an asbestos packing between the sides and bottoms of said casings, one or more top layers of asbestos material upon the upper side of the internal case 0, and bolts connecting the lower side of the case a with the upper side of said top layers, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a portable safe the combination with an external metallic case, an internal metallic necting said plate f with the under side of case having an inner asbestos lining and an the external case a, substantially as and for IO asbestos packingbetween said inner and outer the purpose specified.
case, of a metallic plate 6 arranged above said r 1 V inner case, asbestos material between said ROBERl DAVIS plate and inner case, a metallic cap upon said In presence ofplate 6, said cap having an asbestos filling, a O. O. SHEPHERD,
metallic plate f upon said cap and bolts con- 0. H. MOSIER.
