The chest is also particularly constructed on its interior with .a valved pocket in which camphor 'or an Io'dorifertms substance may be confined, and from which the fumes or odors may be released or shut-off alternatively. The chest is also made with double walls and the space between the walls is filled with cellular asbestos, and to avoid excess weight so that large-sized chests may be easily handled I use sheet-metal of relatively thin guage to build up the walls of the chest and reenforce these thin walls with strips of angle iron, and also channel and rib the interior walls to strengthen them. These channels and ribs are also of utility in supporting division plates to provide separate vertical and horizontal compartments within the chest. The chest is also provided with a hollow hinged cover especially constructed to furnish a tire-proof joint.
In the accompanying drawings, Fig. 1 is a sectional view vertically and transversely through a chest constructed acording to my invention, on line 1-1, of Fig. 3. F ig. 2 is a horizontal section of the chest on line 2-2, of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section o't the chest on line 3 3, ol Fig. 2. Figs. Ll, 5 and 6 are enlarged sectional detail views of the cover for the chest, showing the fire-proof hinge, the valve pocket, and the fire-proof joint, respectively. Fig. 7 shows a face view of the valve pocket within the cover. Fig. 8 is a vertical section, enlarged, showing the base construction of the chest at one corner where a staple support is required for a caster.
The invention comprises a chest of rectangular shape fabricated from thin sheetmetal stamped or pressed and secured together to provide hollow walls 2 at each side and end of the chest, each wall 2 being formed with an offset base portion 3 and an inturned bottom flange 1 and an in wardly-extending top flange 5 having a short Vdown-wardiyextending vlip '6. -'meeting' edges of; the front-and sidei-wallf2 are m'itered and welded together, and; pieces The of `a ,ng';le-iron 8`are seated'horizontail'ly `on the i-nturned flangeja witlnno'fset'v-B vvof each side wall- 2. The spaces between the outer and inner walls 2 and 15, respectively, and the two bottom plates and 12, respectively, are iilled with cellular asbestos 18. The inner longitudinal walls are also provided with vertical ribs and channels 20 pressed from the stock at spaced intervals, and a series ot' horizontal ribs 21 are also pressed in the same walls to provide rests or seats for a horizontal division plate 22. One or more vertical divisional plates 23 may be inserted within the vertical channels 20 to divide the interior of the chest into separate compartments. ment 25 may also be formed at one end oi' the chest, if desired.
A hollow cover 26 lined with cellular asbestos 27 is secured to the longitudinal upper edge of one of the side walls 2 by means of a piano hinge 28, see Fig. t, and a thin strip oi asbestos 29 is afhxed to one of' the leaves of this hinge to seal the joint and make the chest fire-proof at this point. rFhe inner wall or plate 30 of' the cover is also stamped or pressed with a bead or rib 31 extending` parallel with an end fia-nge 32 so as to provide a recess or channel 33 within which the narrow flange portion 5 of the end walls and the front wall 2 is adapted to be seated, and in order to make a fire-proof joint along` all the border edges of the cover, I seat or secure a strip of asbestos 34 within the recess or channel 31 of the cover, see Fig. 6. said plate 30 within the hollow space in the cover. flat round disk 37 having perforations 8S over a portion of its face and a large notch 39 in one edge, is mounted in a rotatable position at one side of plate 30 at the front or open side of receptacle 36. Disk 37 has a thumb piece 40 to rotate it so that the perforations 38 may be either covered or opened, and by rotating the disk to bring its notch 39 opposite the semi-circular opening 85 the interior receptacle 36 becomes accessible, and a disinfectant, deodorizer or odoriterous substance may be placed therein. Vhen the disk is turned to a closed position the substances placed within the receptacle are safetly confined therein, although the odors may be permitted to escape in a greater or less degree by opening and eX- posing the perforations in the disk.
lhat I claim is:
l. A chest having inner and outer walls and reinforcing spacing strips of metal between said walls, and sheets of cellular asbestos filling the spaces between said walls and said reinforcing` strips, and a hollow hinged cover for said chest having a cellular interlining of asbestos, and said chest being provided in one upper corner thereof with a receptacle and the inner side Walls of said chest having horizontal ribs for seating a horizontal portion adjacent said receptacle.
2. A chest having a hinged cover, the walls of said chest'being made of separate sheets of metal flanged and interlocked in spaced relations and offset at the the base to provide hollow walls with an offset base, reenforcing angles within the offset base portion, and a false bottom resting upon said angles, and said hollow walls embodying reinforcing strips of metal and cellular asbestos.
