Description

B. F.7ROGERS- Weighing-Scales.
No. 205,684. Patented July 2,1878.
. I e l UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGE BENJAMIN F. ROGERS, OF LATHROP, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN WEIGHING-SCALES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 205,684, dutcd July 2,1878; application filed i May 20, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. ROGERS, of Lathrop, in the county of Clinton and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket-Scales; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of my invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which forms a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved pocket-scales, the cover ofthe box being open; and Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view, the cover being closed.
Similar letters of reference denote correspondin g parts in both figures.
This invention relates to certain improvements in pocket-scales, designed especially for the use of practicing physicians, to enable them to administer accurate doses when called upon in urgent cases.
It consists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts, which I shall now proceed more fully to describe with reference to the drawings hereto annexed, in which- A is a wooden box of suitable dimensions, having a hinged cover, B, and a h inged partition or platform, O, forming a cover to the body of the box. Upon the partition O is fixed a standard, a, in which is pivoted the beam b. The latter is curved downwardly to both sides, and to its ends, which are curved or bent upwardly, are screwed the pans or platforms c c, the levels of which are below the fulcrum of the beam or lever. To the sides of the pans c o are hinged small metallic supports d d, which maybe raised up for the purpose of supporting pieces of paper when placed upon the pans to receive the medicine. The lower bent ends of the beam play in slits e e in the partition O.
The body A of the box is divided by partitions ff into three compartments, f', the central one of which is used as a receptacle for the weights. To facilitate the handling of these, some of which are necessarily very small, I prefer to line the central compartment with a concave piece of metal, by which any sharp corners are avoided.
In the cover B, I prefer to arrange two cushions, k k, fitting upon the pans c c, and being for the purpose of preventing rattling and consequent wear when the device is carried in the pocket. The cover may be fastened with lock and key or with an ordinary spring-lock, as desired.
My improved pocket-scales will be found very useful and convenient to medical men and others. It may also be adapted to various other purposes, such as assaying, &c. Being very simple in construction, it is not liable to get out of order, and it may be manufactured at a small cost.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- As an improvement in pocket-scales, the box or case A B, having hinged partition or platform C, upon which is arranged the standard c, having pivoted curved beam b, carryin g' the detachable pans o c, provided with hinged supports d d, the box A being subdivided into compartments fj", and the cover provided with cushions k 1r, substantially as and for the purposes herein shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BENJAMIN FRANKLIN ROGERS.
Witnesses A. J. OREM, WM. SERVICE.
