' BOTTLE CASE. No. 365,851,. Patented July 5, 18'87.
UNITED STATES PATENT Fries.
HENRY PALMER, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
BOTTLE-CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 365,851, dated July 5, 1887. Application filed March 26, 1887. Serial No. 232,568. (No model.)
To aZl whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY PALMER, of the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Demijohn and Bottle Cases; and I hereby de clare the following to be.a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to a demijohn or bottle case; and it consists of an outer case with top, bottom, and three sides permanently secured together, and a false bottom and one side suitably braced together and hinged within the outer case, so that the demijohn is attached to or supported upon these parts and turns with them. The hinged side forms one side of the outer case, when closed, and may be locked or otherwise secured. When tilted outward, it forms a support for the demijohn or bottle which is carried with it, so that the contents may be easily emptied, while the weight is wholly supported by the fulcrum-pins, about which the side turns.
Referring to the accompanying drawing for a more complete explanation of my invention, the figure is a perspective view showing the case with the side and demijohn turned outward.
A is the exterior box or case, which usually stands vertically, andhas the side B fulcrumed or pivoted, as shown at C. The supplemental or false bottom is fixed to the lower end of this side, so as to project inwardly, and when the side is closed up it stands above and upon the main bottom of the case.
E E are side rods or braces which extend diagonally from the pivoted side to the false bottom, so as to hold the two together and prevent them from being separated. These side rods are preferably formed with eyes F, through which a cord may be passed, thence through the handle and around the demijohn or bottle, so as to hold it firmly in place rest ing upon the bottom and against the movable side.
broken by blows or shocks, it may be entirely surrounded by a cork, tule,or other fibrous or elastic packing; but I'prefer to employ only a backing, as shown at G, which is placed between the demijohn and the movable side, against which it is secured, and this will fur- In order to prevent the demijohn beingv nish ample protection, as no otherport'ion of the demijohn touches or in any way comes in contact with the exteriorcase when closed up.
It will readily be seen that when the side B is turned so as to fit into the proper place in the outer case the demijohn will be contained within the case, resting upon the false bottom and securely fastened to this swinging side. This side is locked or otherwise secured in any suitable manner,
In order to prevent the contents of the demijohn from striking the upper edge of the swinging side when it is turned down about its pivot for the purpose of emptying, I have cut away a slot or opening in the upper edge ofthis side, as shown at H, which will leave sufficient space for the contents of the demij ohn to flow without striking the edge of the box. By this construction it will be very'easy to discharge or empty the demijohn, and where it is of very large capacity it makes it very easy to handle it and its contents.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A containing-case for bottles or demijohns, consisting of a box three sides and the top and bottom of which are secured together, while the fourth side is pivoted or fulcrumed to turn between the fixed sides and is provided with a supplemental bottom fixed to it, in combination with braces whereby the movable bottom and side areheld together,-and a means for securing the demijohn to said braces, substantially as herein described.
2. The containing-case for bottles or demijohns, consisting of the. fixed sides, top, and bottom, the fulcrumed or pivoted side having the false bottom secured and braced to it so as to support the demijohn, and means for securing the latter, in combination with an elastic pad or support upon which the demijohn may rest to prevent breakage, substantially as herein'dcscribed.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
HENRY PALMER.
