DEMIJOHN OR BOTTLE SAFE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,903, dated April 15, 1884-.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, ISAAC B. WOLLARD, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county. of San Francisco, and State of California, have invented certain Improvements in Demijohn or Bottle Safes, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to produce a case whereby large glass vessels can be safely transported, and at the same time to discharge the whole or part of their contents without removing them from the safe. How I accomplish this is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figures 1 and 2 are front and side views, showing the demijohn in position to be transported, the front and side of the case being removed. Fig. 3 is a plan, with the top of the case removed, showing the basket or tray. The dotted line in circle represents the portion occupied by the demijohn if the basket be square; and Fig. 4 is a side view, showing the delnijohn or bottle in position to be discharged of its contents.

, Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views- It will be observed that the bottle or demijohn A is slung in a swinging basket or tray, B which swings on the trunnions O. This basket can be made of any suitable material, such as heavy tin-plate or light galvanized iron riveted or soldered, or both, if desired.

The trunnions 0 pass into the wooden case on both sides. When the package is prepared for transporting, thewedge D is inserted beneath the basket and relieves the trunnions of any weight, and will also prevent the basket from turning. This wedge has a handle, E, by which it can be removed, when desired. The trunnions O are hot located in the center of gravity of the basket, but to one side toward the front, with the object of keeping the demijohn from tilting outward of its own accord.

F is a woodenyoke to secure the neck of the vessel, and is held in position by the cleats G at one end, and resting upon the straps H at the other. The hole in this yoke that shuts down over the neck of the demijohn must be 5o large enough to allow it to be lifted bythe end next the door up over the stopper, as shown in Fig. 4;, when required to remove it; but when in position, as shown in Fig. 2, this hole can be filled with paper or any soft material, and thereby secure the neck of the vessel.

The bottle or demijohn is prevented from falling out of the basket, when it is to be emptied of its contents, by the loop I and hook J. The hook J is fastened to and near the bot-tom of the basket B, but is easily disconnected, when desired, the loop I passing around the neck of the bottle.

The case, as a usual thing, will be made of wood, with all its parts held together by screws or nails, when used only to transport liquids; but for domestic use, or for the convenience of retail merchants, it may be made with the front K and top L on hinges, as shown in Fig. 4, the top L resting on the block M, fastened to the door K.

Now, it will be seen that by putting the bottle or demijohn into the basket or tray B,

hooking the loop I with the hook J, swinging it into an upright position, inserting the wedge D, placing the yoke Fover the neck, dropping the top L, and closing the front K, hooking or looking it in the most convenient way, I have a useful, convenient, and safe device for protecting demijohns and like vessels from fracture, not only in the house or store, but also in transportation.

Having now illustrated and described my invention, what I deem as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A demijohn or bottle safe having a swinging basket or tray, B, in combination with the wedge D, substantially as and for the purpose described.

2. A demijohn or bottle safe having a. swinging basket or tray, B, in combination with the yoke F, for securing the neck of the vessel, substantially as described.

3. A demijohn or bottle safe having a swinging basket or tray, B, in combination with the loop I and hook J, substantially as set forth.
