Description

(No Model.)
J. G. AJVOGELSONG.
LINE HOLDER FOB. BRICK LAYERS.
I/VVE/VTOR ATTORNEY,
Patented Oct. 23, 1888.
WITNESS JULIUS CAESAR AUGUSTUS VOGELSONG, OF ARDMORE, PENNSYLVANIA.
LINE HOLDER FOR BRlCKLAYERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 391,4:96, dated October 23, 1888. Application filed July 18, 1888. Serial No. 280.285. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, J ULIUs CAESAR AUGUS' TUS VOGELSONG,OfArdI110I6, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Line-Holders for Bricklayers,of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to an improvementin devices for holding the cords or lines by which courses of bricks are gaged by bricklayers, the object of the improvement being to provide for the ready application of the gage-line to the wall under construction, when either a corner or fiat surface is available, and to permit the corner bricks to be aligned without necessitating the removal of the line-holder on said corner.
The invention consists of a novel construc tion and combination of parts, substantially as hereinafter fully described and as distinctly claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is an elevation of a part of a brick wall to which a gage-line and line-holders embodying my improvement are applied. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the line-holder.
A designates a brick wall, the bricks in each course of which are to be aligned, as they are laid by a cord or line, B, stretched parallel with the course and fastened at its ends tothe wall.
Each holder O, used to fasten the ends of the line B to the wall, is preferably formed of a single piece of metal with a straight blade-like pin, D, sharpened at its outer end, a shoulder, E, projecting at right angles to the flat side of the pin at its inner end, which is formed with an enlargement, F, a recess, G, extending into the enlargement F from the shoulder E and the inner end of the pin, and a handle, H, projecting from the inner end of the enlargement and formed with a cross-slit, I, in its extremity. HolesJ Kare bored through the inner end of the pin D and the handle H, respectively, on
opposite sides of the enlargementF,to receive loosely the corresponding end of the line B, which is passed through the hole J from the side on which the shoulder E is located along the outside of the enlargement F, which is formed with a V-groove, L,t0 receive and gri p' the line, and thence inward through the hole K.
In using the holder 0 to fasten one end of the line to the flat surface of the wall A, as at the left of Figs. 1 and 2, the line Bis wrapped several times around the body of the holder, and the pin D stuck endwise in the mortar or seam between the bricks at the desired point, as shown. In fastening the other end of the line to the corner of the wall A the shoulder E is engaged with the corner, the pin D bearing, as shown at the right of Figs. 1 and 2, flatwise on the line B and hence on the wall, and serving to hold the shoulderE from displacement, and the line is drawn through the holes J and K until the desired tautness is obtained. The free end of theline can then be wedged in the slit I in the handle, as shown, or fastened around the same, as bya halfhitch. The line B can thus be securely attached when eithera corner or flat surface is at hand, and owing to the recess G in the enlargement a direct sight can be had along the line of the corner without removing the holder.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The herein-described line-holder,consisting of a flat pin having an approximately right-angular shoulder at its inner end, and a handle, and formed with guide-holes for the line, as and for the purpose stated.
2. A line-holder of the character described, formed with a shoulder to engage the corner of a wall, a bearer to rest upon the face of the wall, a recess at the inner end of the shoulder, and guide-holes for the line, as and for the purpose stated.
JULIUS CAESAR AUGUSTUS VOGELSONG.
