Description
R. G. KENNEDY.
MASONS SCOTCH.
APPLICATION man JULY15, 1919.
awe/WW fiobeff C Kennedy Patented Oct. 3
ldatented @ch 3, lQZZO MASONS SCOTCH.
Application filed July 15,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, ROBERT G. KENNEDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at lValsen, in the county of Huerfano, State of Colorado, have invented certain new and us improvements in ll l asons Scotches; and do hereby declare the following to he a full, clear, and exact description oi the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in masons tools and particularly to scratching tools known as scotches.
One object of the present invention is to provide a novel and improved means for securing the head on the handle Another object is to provide a novel and improved structure of this character which is simple in its construction and strong and durable as well as effective in its operation.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the -iollowing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the tool.
Figure 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken on the line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure lis an enlarged horizontal sectional view taken on the line ll of Figure l, looking downwardly in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 5 i 'l' the head hai idl o.
Referring particularly to the accoin 'ianying drawing, represents the head of the tool, which is in the general form of a pick head, and has the central enlarged or thickened portion 11. In this portion 11, and extending from the inner end to a point adjacent the outer intermediate portion or": the head, is a recess which includes the outer elongated portion 12, extending longitudinally oi? the head, and the substantially circular bore 13. extending at right angles to the portion 12. In opposite sides of this bore, the walls are longitudinally slotted, as shown at 1 for the reception of the cylindrical stem 15, 01? the handle. On the end oi: the stem 15, which enters the head, there an inverted perspective view oil? the tool removed -from the 1919. Serial No. 310,879.
are formed the two oppositely extending radial lugs 16, said lugs being of a width to easily slide longitudinally through the slots 14 oil the head. In inserting the member 1:") into the head, said member is turned so that the lugs will enter the opposite slots 1. when the stem is pushed into the head. and when the hi ts reach a position inwardly ol' the shoulders 17, "Formed between the portion 12 and the bore, the stem is tin'ned until the lugs lie within the said portion 12 with their side faces flush with the sine faces of the enlargement of the head. In the inserted end oi the stem 15 there is formed a recess 18 which receives the inner end of the set screw 19 which is disposed through the center of the head.
The other end oi the metal stem 15 is formed with a socket, as shown at 20 and in the side walls of the socket there are formed aligning openings 21. Disposed in the socket 18 one end of the wooden hand grip 22, rivets 23 being passed through the aligned OPQIIlHgS and through said grip to hold the 521 1116 firmly therewithin. What is claimed is: In a device oi the class described, a head, a tubular extension formed integral with said head and projecting at right angles thereto, the said head having a recess in 031m munication with the hollow part of said extension, the recess of said head extending into the medial portion thereof and being enlarged at its base at diametrically opposite points, the said extension being cut away upon i s opposite sides and longitudh nally to provide slots coextensive with said UXtPIISlmI and coninuuiicating with said on larged recess of the head, a handle oi a size to snugly iit in said tubular extension, radiall v disposed lugs at the extreme inner end oi said handle, said inner end being of a width to permit its passage through said slots and of a length and thickness to snugly engage the recess in the head upon a quarter turn of said end, and means for trictionally holding said l'lELllCllG in said head.
In testimony whereof, I atlix my signature, in the presence or? witnesses.
